Starting the interior restoration and I am finding that everything needs to be varnished. However was wondering what types of wood are used. Anybody done this research before?

Both my Marinettes used mahogany. I removed the trim so that I could work flat on sawhorses, stripped it with stripease, bleached with Clorox, sanded, filled, and varnished with Epiphane Bootlak. Put it all back in. Looks nice.

Newer boats than my '75 might have teak. The routine would be about the same.

My slip mate--who does gorgeous wood working--uses Cetol varnish. He says it not only looks great, which it does, it also holds up well in the marine environment.

As for us, we used Weldwood stain on the interior, and more or less let the outside teak "go natural".

Hope that helps.

The wood in my boat is mahogany. For what it's worth, this is my favorite finishing material:

http://www.waterlox.com/...tion-marine-finish.aspx

You can get good results just wiping this product on--you have to be careful about the applicator of course. Rather than sand between coats, I use a 3-M scratch pad designed for that purpose. It keep the dust down so there is less time using a tack rag.

Mahogany or teak? I am not sure which I have in my 81 M. At the house I have a mahogany front door and a teak swim platform made into a coffee table, I finished both with Tung Oil. They both look close to the same. How does one tell which one is in the M?

Teak is pretty hard and dense, with a fine grain, and feels slippery. Mahogany is less dense and usually has a prominent grain and a fresh surface is not slippery, it feels dry. If you get the two side-by-side it is pretty easy to tell. I am not sure this will help....

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I would have posted my reply earlier but could not login. It took me days to figure out why. I still don't know what happened to my original password, but I finally figured out why I could not clear the old login password so I could use the new one. When I went to clear the history I had the "preserve favorite website data" box checked even though I was deleting the cookies and passwords. Oh well, lesson learned. I'd rather work on my boat that screw around with this computer.

Thanks Kenny, your cabin is beautiful. Did you use a stain or just sand and varnish?
