I'm the new proud owner of a '77 32' FB Express. My problem is I have a Lab that likes to swim off the boat. I was looking to avoid lifting her over the transom down to the swim platform by fabricating some sort of ramp that could be attached to the top of the gunnels. ... any ideas out there?

Werner, Since i have two dogs and were raised on the river i'll tell you what i've seen , so far. Did see a couple with a small set of steps , about 1ft. wide by 3ft. Put bungee cords to hold down. They had a 3ft. swim platform. Mine's just 18in. so not an opition and anyway they had little FOO FOO dogs which don't take up much space and weigh very little.
As for a ramp from the gunnels the angle would leave you with one hell of a large ramp in lenght ( hypotenuse ) . Done thought about it. Personally we use a pontoon to take our 4 legged kids out. Hope you figure something out.

Maybe doggie davits?

Sorry, couldn't resist. (Actually it might make sense with a proper harness.)

Now if U truly love your Lab &your back U’d install a hydraulic platform for him/her with a remote so when the Lab got up on the platform U could lower & rise it plus pooch would have a place to sun bathe on the Swim Platform. Think The devil made Me type this pun Dancing
How does it get from the water to the S/P now do U have to lift it up to the S/P than over the rail
your aching back d'oh!

Most dog life jackets have a handle built in where the dog's spine is that make for easy lifting out of the water.. At least for smaller dogs.. Lifting a soaking wet 80lb lab might not be such a good idea but it will make helping the pooch get back in the boat easier.. And be sure to have a life jacket on those dogs, they might not like it at first but they get used to it.. And I have seen BigM's with a door that goes through the transom, that would probably be a pain to install, but would come in real handy..

Joe, Maybe not on a Marinette but maybe over the shoulders of a well endow woman. Great treat to watch her make a lift.

WM had a doggie ladder made of plastic but i think it was for a low water runabout. Now would be good time to work on a bi fold alu ladder with a 1/2 submerged float approach

Okay Mark, can't resist. Hydraulics not only for beer but to lift captain back on boat as well. After spending the day swimming around Sand Island with you this summer, I could've used a little help getting back on the boat after the beer.lolApplause

Doggie Docks! The price is of course ridiculous but the product video is pretty funny.

Your right Tim, Since I'm 434 yrs. old in dog yrs. and you have bad knees the hydraulic ramp would have been a great help for the Captn's , the beer and of coarse a dog. I don't know about you but i think i prefer the davits on a good looking woman. The saying at the island is : you can watch the show or be part of it : just depends on how many beers you have.

All good ideas. If I go the hydraulic route, I'm going to have to really dig into the forum to find ideas on placement of the huge battery bank I will need to power it!

Seriously, thanks. I E-mailed the DoggieDock folks to see if they have a model that will reach the top of the Marinette gunnel (48"+?)

You have really stirred up the smartaxx replies with this one. Try a longer plank that would reach into the water from the gunwale. You could put a piece of swimming pool "noodle" flotation on the water end..some kind of tiedown (bungee?) on the cockpit end. Store it (tied down, of course) on the swim platform. Perhaps, put a couple of strips of wood at intervals crosswise on your dogwalk to help the pooch get back up with minimum slip.

With all the (well intentioned) humor, I'd offer this...
The angle needed for a ramp from the water line to the gunwale would have to be very severe -or - the length of the ramp (to accommodate a reasonable angle of 20 deg. (which is what the dog docks seem to utilize at rest)) would be over 11.6 ft. That's a long haul and you'd have to utilize a 2 part (hinged?) ramp for decent storage.
An alternative would be to fashion a dog dock type setup which could slip over the slots in the swim platform. (takes care of pooch getting out of water). To get him/her from the swim platform back into the boat would take another ramp running from the swim platform (parallel to the stern) up to the gate thru the stern railing with a small horizontal platform (see next) at the top. The platform would have to be off to the side of the gate to allow other swimmers access. Finally, a ramp / step in the stern area of the boat would be in position. So man's best friend could:
- use the stern step to get to the gate.
- step over onto the platform and then down the ramp
- jump into the water -or- use the dog dog setup to do so.
When he's/she's tired the system would be used in reverse: Up the dog dock, up the swim platform ramp to the platform, thru the gate onto the steps.

A lot of work, but the only part that'd need to be a temp usage would be the dog dock. The swim ramp/ platform could be permanently attached. Only a small step stool would be needed inside the stern area.

Bill,

Your comments show you have good conseptualization skills. I already use a lifejacket to get her up onto the swim platform of my fiberglass boat and she walks through the transom door to get in.

With the Marinette, I have no gate in the stern railing so I dread trying to lift her from the narrow swim platform over the back rail. Im thinking of the folding idea going strait up to the side gunnel.

Our friends with a swimming pool have a lab that climbs the ladder and goes down the slide. Could you have a swimming pool style ladder sideways on the swim platform with a platform at the top. The dog could jump from the platform into the cockpit. Labs are smart and will figure it out with a little coaching and treats.
