I bought chart plotter software from Cruising Services in Sarasota Florida.. It's great, it's a disk and you put it in a laptop and the charts come up, and you plug a GPS into the laptop and then you appear on the chart. It was 99.00 new. And yes, it's color. Best value boat purchase so far! I'll see if I can find one on e bay for you.

If you really want to use your Lap Top as your plotter you may want to look at Captain Voyager. A buddy of mine used it on the Loop and I have it on my laptop just for chart reference but haven't plugged an antenae to my laptop to use it underway. He said it worked great from the Loop to some Bahamas cruising they did.

As far as a fixed mount plotter goes we use the Standard Horizon stuff with C-Map on the Tn. River. The smallest ones are still very usable and can be had for less than $500.

Does anybody know of any chart plotting software for the Mac OS X? The stuff from Cruising Services seems to be all PC based.

Thanks

Yes. There is a package from http://polarnavy.wordpress.com/ that is a nav program for the W word, OS X, and linux. I am trying to get it to run on linux but for some reason it will not recognize my gps. I am using an eeePC netbook from Asus and a USB gps sensor with nmea output.

Just buy an inexpensive PC lap top, even a used one, and designate it for the chart plotter, and you are still way ahead of the curve price wise..

Agreed. I have an old lap top whose "i" "e" and a few other letters don't work any more, but it gives me a GIGANTIC, full color GPS readout.

Jeff

PS: The "N-Route" program Garmin offered to do this is no longer available, but I have a copy should anyone need it.

For ease of use I like Garmin's Blue Chart. For $150 you get the software and one chart. It works seamlessly with Garmin products. Not sure if the software acts as a chart plotter in its current version. My orginal version did if it was hooked to my handheld Garmin.

It took some head scratching but I have installed SeaClear II to try and pull tracks & waypoints off my Standard Horizon. Not much luck so far, Standard wants you to buy their card reader then backup you unit to its card, remove card from unit and insert it in reader.

SeaClear itself seems to work well and it's hard to beat the price if you have the time to figure it out.
