Spent a little time on Detour last weekend and noticed the starboard flame arrestor was "sooted" up pretty badly. The port arrestor had some, but not like the starboard. I guess it could be timing but the engine is a replacement and didn't have a timing pointer when installed. We did the best we could but??
Starts and runs well but seems to bog a little at higher RPMs. Thought someone might have an idea. Thanks in advance.

Could be something simple like the pcv hoses are switched and you've got blowby being pulled into the arrestor instead of into the base of the carb.

Thanks Peter. I'll check but with my luck, it will be more involved. Don't know if you follow college football but it looks like your Big Blue, Michigan Wolverines will play our MS State Bulldogs in the Gator Bowl, good luck.

That soot is caused by backfiring, which is a lean condition (fuel problems), too advanced timing, or a cross fire (wires arching over to another).

Soot on airfilters is what caused me to find holes in my diesel exhaust elbows.

Thanks Jeff, I am of the same opinion. I have suspected timing all along but don't know how I will time the engine without the timing pointer. Is it possible to use the pointer from the port engine?

Had the same sooty kooky stuff in my arrester , turned out a belt was being slow eaten. Due to under tight tension on a belt.
