They have old WWII amphibious vehicles called Ducks that give tour rides around the greater Cincinnati area on land and water,
but actually DUKW is a military acronym. The letters are codes indicating that it was designed in 1942 (D), for utility/amphibious purposes (U), with front wheel drive (K), and two rear driving axles (W).

We have a similar Duck ride in Philadelphia, albeit one fringed with tragedy. A barge--lacing a look out--ran over the Duck, that had stalled with engine trouble, and killed a couple of European tourists.

Duck , haven't heard that used for awhile. As a kid i got to ride in one . My father was a Captain on the Cincinnati fire department for 20 yrs. and back then would go to the engine house with him quite alot. Could do that then. Outfitted to fight fires on the river waterfront if needed . 'RED', great memory. thanks!

We have a couple of them here in Ketchikan for tours in the summer. They are bigger and are inclosed, with more freeboard than the ones shown on "This Old House" for the Boston project. Best thing about them is the confusion they caused at DMV when they tried to figure out how to do paperwork and license plates for something that is half boat.

Hey guys I had a chance to get a ride in one of those Ducks in Nam. While on duty there our ship the
USS OKANAGAN APA 220 along with the 7th fleet delivered a slue of LCM’s, LCVP’s & about a dozen or two DUCK’s to the South Korean Navy. To make a long story short after delivery & having quite a few hot Brewski’s on shore the crews were return to our ships via one of our give a way Duck’s The amphibian Navy was know as the disposable Navy before every OP U wrote your Mom & told her U’d love Her forever. Ha I showed them I’m still drinking Brewski’s “Willy Wine” this cold ones for YOU. “In Heaven the there’s NO Beer or Wine that’s why we Drink it here”

You'll have bad times, but they'll just wake you up to the good times you weren't paying attention to

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way.I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

The Lane Motor Museum in Nashville (great museum by the way for gearheads and afficianados of weird vehicles) has a big brother to the Duck called a Lark (LARC). It is the largest amphibious vehicle ever used by the US Govt. Some pictures, info, and video here. http://lanemotormuseum.org/larc-lx-1959

It is amazingly large for a wheeled vehicle. The story of how they got it to the Museum is interesting. Down the Cumberland River to Port of Nashville and then through the streets at night!

That. is. so. COOL! Goodyear built something like that here in Akron that is still down at the south pole. Every once in a while someone tries to get enough money to go down there and bring it back.. It's abandoned, so if you can salvage it, it's yours.. It was built for one of the first expedition teams that went there.. Byrd?
