Does anyone, or has anyone used, or had a Gooseneck, or 5th wheel trailer for their boat? Looking at purchasing a used one for my boat. Any feedback would be welcome....... good or bad. Thanks.

I have a 42' aluminum I pull my 39 sedan on with my crew dually and if was ordering a new trailer all over again I might consider it for no other reason than to keep the frame rails straight for maximum strength. I have the big 10" tall thick wall rails and I can very easily get too much tongue weight on my trailer way before the truck squats to a concerning level. I guess for what I do mine is best overall, was $2500 extra back at the time to get goose neck and I need my trailers ability to follow me around corners the way it does rather than like a goose. also I have had mine manuvered with a 3 point on a tractor before and U would loose this option too.

Finding used trailers is tricky. There are no used tri-axles coming up on EBAY at this time. Wrong season. Why a gooseneck? I got a used 41' Slide-on last spring for my 32'. With a conventional trailer hitch we can move it around the yard with a tractor or a 1/2 ton. Over the road I use my GMC 3500 diesel which tows easily.

Let me list some problems I had with my used trailer. 1) The lights didn't work right. Even after I "fixed" them the ground was bad, they got wet and flickered on an off for the whole trip. This winter I get to fix the wiring again. This time I will use all solder connections and waterproof them. 2) I got no spare with the deal. I had a hard time finding load range E 9.50 R70 16.5. These are now an oddball size and the rim and spare I found are real old. 3) The surge brake line broke off right after the actuator coupling. It was a nylon tube and got sun baked. The specs for the Titan 20 coupler calls for a steel main line with double wall flex lines fore and aft. I connected the nylon back up but I can't get to the brake bleed valves until the boat is off the trailer next spring. At that point I get to do a whole brake line replacement job. 4) I also have to cut about 2' off the bunks in back to give more clearance for my props. 5) I have to refit the small bunks just to guide the boat for loading. The outside bunks are set right on top of the main I beams. That works very well on our Marinettes. 6) My class 5 hitch was OK but the heavy duty connector and ball cost another hundo.

When my trailer is all fixed up I might save $3000 bucks under the cost of a new trailer. With a new trailer I would want electric brakes and pressurized waterproof bearings.

When you get a road legal trailer you will be one of the few Yoopers in Munising with a trailer not made out of old mobile homes.

You may wish to seriously consider going with electric brakes. Many states now require trailers exceeding 5000" GVW.

The ticket is expensive and they will dead line your trailer until it is towed to a repair facility and modified to meet current specs.

One of my in-laws found this out a couple of years ago while trailering through Wisconsin.

Toppers love to stop modified mobile home trailers. 9 out of 10 will be in some form of violation.

States are going broke and are more aggressively looking for revenue streams. Vehicle weight is the number one hwy $ producer .. next is equipment and permit violations on commercial vehicles.. etc..etc.

Thanks for the input! Yoop I agree everyone who owns a marrinette has a trailer made with mobile home axles around here. The guy I bought my boat from has a nice trailer he just built with mobile home axles for $2500. If Im going to spend that much money or more I guess I would prefer to be legal going down the road. I found the trailer Im talking about for $1800. It has 3 new axles but needs some work. The axles are 8000# with electric brakes. I have searched everyday on craigslist and ebay looking for a good buy. Thanks doc I have seen your ad and would love to buy your trailer I just can't bring myself to spend that much money if I can help it. Not saying your trailer isn't worth that price at all I just can't bring myself to spend that much at this point. Its still an option though. I have found all kinds of trailers in florida for $2500-$4000 that would work, but I have to find a way to get it back to michigan. Anyway its been a tough decision so far.
