I bought a prop from Crigslist that has 14x9 stamped on it, which is what is needed for a 28 express single. When I received the prop it measures 13x9. The prop looks great except for the inch that is missing.

My question is can this be repaired or might it work as a 13? The prop shop I use is closed for the winter.

Any Ideas to correct my bargain would be appreicated. It would make a great paper weight if not a prop.

You may already have a backup prop shop in mind, but if not, I can recommend Delta Propeller here in the Cincinnati area. http://www.deltaprop.com/ I've used them in the past and they did great work. I can't speak to the possibility if then can restore the missin' inch (Joel's got a good point).

Have seen this way to much when buying on site with no visual inspection . Still probably can sell with no trouble for a 13x 9 at a price that will let you recover what you spent for it. Not worth the time or trouble to see if it can be enlarged. Have been burnt a few times my self so don't fell bad.

Most likely it was a 14 dia at one time, but erosion and a few oops may have reduced it a bit.

If it were mine, I beat a heavy cup into the ends of the blades with a ball peen and install it. (Seriously.) The performance would be about the same as a 14 dia without the heavy cup.

I watched a prop shop pro do that to one of mine, using a vertical 4 x 4 wooden post carved to a rounded point. He tapped away a little at a time until the required cupping was on each blade. I've done a few outboard props that way since, with good results, and serious hydro racers do it all the time at the races, using a trailer hitch ball for their post.

Jeff

PS: Prop ran perfectly, by the way.

Do you by chance have your WOT rpm, speed at same rpm and your ratio on the tranny? If so we can plug your #s into a prop computer and see what kind of slip #s you had with the old prop. If it's not something horrible you can just go with Jeff's idea on adding cup. The only downside to the cup is performance in reverse and with a single you will be backing diagonally before you ever get to that point. But... If you were running with 25% or better prop slip before the smaller dia. aint gonna cut it.

Thanks for the information. I will call a couple of prop shops and get their ideas. If I can cup it and have a good prop this might be the way to go. The old prop on the boat is very thin and pitted and needs replacing.

We are planning to trailer the boat to Pittsburg and come the length of the Ohio River this summer so a good prop would be in order.

I gave one hundred dollars of the prop plus postage total 115.00. Sometimes my bargans do not work out.

Bill,

I will try to do that. If all goes well I should make the trip in Late July or August. Gas price could be a problem but at this time I am planning the trip.
