How about some opinions on marine AM/FM antennas. I searched the old post and got some ideas. Some are to use the Shakespeare 4357-S splitter to eliminate the need for separate AM/FM antennas and operate AM/FM and VHF radios at the same time or to use a TV antenna, or a dedicated AM/FM antenna. If I do the last which size (length) an 8 footer or one of the shorter ones?

Shamrock,

I’ve used the splitter U refer to but I found that if both radios were in use it would cut out the AM/FM when I would use the VHF to talk on & had several come backs that I was garbled if I’d shut off the AM /FM the VHF worked fine. Think So I went to Radio Shack bought a regular car AM/FM antenna 6"/8" in height ran a cable up to the F/B. Two words of advice don’t mount near the F/B instrument console or on the port side gunnel after it got broke off twice. Brick wall Seems that if one losses their balance that’s the first thing they grab & snap there goes another antenna. Boo hoo! I mounted it on the Starboard side. Worked great I was able to receive all local FM stations & a majority of the AM ones also. Dancing

You'll have bad times, but they'll just wake you up to the good times you weren't paying attention to

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way.I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

I have also used the Shakespeare splitter and it has not performed well. In fact, if you want one, make me an offer. It is one of those products that sounds like a great idea, but doesn't actually work.

Because I could only get a few very strong tv stations using the splitter and my vhf antenna, I instead bought a small, powered tv/radio antenna from Newegg. It is bow-tie-shaped and is small and light enough to be mounted from the bimini frame on the flybridge. It has a wall wart that powers it through the cable, but my tv is ac also so this is not an inconvenience. Those with a dc tv for use away from the dock will need to power the unit from dc.

The marine environment is tough. I replaced all the mounting hardware with stainless, and the wire elements are nonferrous, but it remains to be seen how long it will work. I have one of the round antennas but have not mounted it because I will need a separate post (strong enough for the off-balance grab Norm mentions) to hold it. I suspect that one of the small round ones is the way to go, but a round one is too heavy for the bimini frame.

I'm like you Doc, have a small glass antenna for the radio and a larger one which handles the VHF. When first started working on her, looked in the; i guess they call it the wine cellar or to me the storage hole and saw this mess of wiring just taped together . Was removing the old radio and hit the other power source for the VHF and WA LA , there went the VHF and old Radio and memory card. Thought i had the power off, didn't use multi to check. Going to replace the VHF but can't make up my mine to use a hand held or put the larger one in.
