We have a 32ft Marinette Sedan Flybridge and are thinking of putting in an airconditioning unit in our boat. We are trying to determine the unit size and am asking what other Marinettes of this size have installed either by factory or an afterfit. I know it is winter and we're looking at 3 degrees this coming Friday, but just planning on air on the boat for summer makes this weary winter tolerable!

Thanks for your help

Art,

Seeing it’s so hard to post Pix on site as of late email me your E-M address via the site & I’ll send U some pix of the way one of the members did it, it’s neat compact & properly done. I was gunna do it this way but sold the “One Too Many” before funds where available. Now this isn’t the only way to do this. but it only takes up the storage space under the galley seat. Or U can go to the archives & read how others on this site have done it. But this one in particular impressed me. Dancing Oh BTW welcome to the site even tough U've been a member since 2008 but it's youronly your 2nd post Pray do join in more often Whistle

Not less than 16,000 BTU's. Cruise-air (Dometic) now makes a newer model that performs even better than that, at the same amp draw.

With all of the glass our boats have, they struggle to keep cool, even with the big 16k unit :(

Art,

I'm in complete agreement with the Norm and John. "Sunset Seeker" has a 16k Cruiseair unit mounted under the aft dinette seat. It's a godsend during the summer.

A suggestion... The waters you cruise in may be much cleaner than the Ohio River where I boat, but eventually, the outlet flow for the unit will diminish. This is normally due to a build up of crud in the lines. Installing a automotive coolant "T" with a threaded cap on the coil side of the circulating pump AND a shut off between that "T" and pump will allow you to backflush the junk out of the system.
Closing the valve (this doesn't take the place of the normal raw water inlet valve mounted right near the hull) prevents damage to the pump. I've done this a couple of times (at the suggestion of a local marine AC tech) and the flow came out black as night for a few minutes. After a good flushing (with a hose connected to the marina's water system) there's a noticeable improvement in the cooling capability and output flow.

While the snow flies--assuming your "Admiral" is also handy with a sewing machine--you can make up a set of insulating curtains for those giant (love 'em!) windows (that make Ms an enjoyable boat instead of a damn "cave"). Without insulating the windows you'll need TWO huge AC units to keep cool. My "Admiral" (I'm still the Captain!) uses a white, felt-like material as a backing behind the curtains. The windshield is covered as well (held with snaps). Without them our 16 K BTU AC unit would never keep up with the heat load.

Anyone have a suggestion of the route to take for a duct to the V-berth in a 32? I replaced the original unit with a 16,000 btu MarineAir in the same location under the cabinet between the galley and sofa, duct blows straight up, but the v-berths need circulation.

Through the galley cabinets and behind the fridge is simple enough, but I'm uncertain of the route into the v-berths.

Suggestions?

Paul,

Have U thought about running the duct work to the V berth under the galley table deck to the V berth & venting thru the clothes locker bulkhead. Just a suggestion Think

One other consideration is to put the AC unit on the roof (using an RV unit such as a Coleman). The roof is made for this with the appropriate beams making the 14 inch square opening you need--just Sawzall out the aluminum, drill a few holes, and bolt the unit in place. You'll have to drop the ceiling to run the 120 volt cable, but that's all. Finally, the FB seat goes over where the AC unit is, which is wasted space anyhow.

Jeff

PS: The AC unit I mentioned costs about 700 bucks and is 13,500 BTUs. It does a dandy job of keeping the salon area cool, but "Not so much, narw!" (PA Dutch) in keeping the galley and Vee berth area cool. We use a fan to blow the cool air forward, which helps a bit.

That's how mine was installed. Keeps the berth quite comfortable. The other duct is to a vent on the side of the lower helm station (just above the stairs)

Hi Norm

I don't mind you posting them. I forgot all about that I had posted them a long time ago. If anyone would like more commentary on the installation of the big 16000 btu A/C , let me know I can write something up.

Thanks, Craig

Hey All you great Marinette owners,

Thanks for all the helpful info and the pics on the air conditioning installation. What a big help this has been! I am the first mate and I do a lot of the research and the sewing. Insulated curtains are made and hung every season. And I am the right hand "man" on all our boat projects. The installation under seat looks like a slick way to install. Can't wait to show this to "the captain, my other half". You all have made our day!
