I installed a one-wire alternator a while back and while replacing a battery discovered that the "one-wire" is connected to a battery not used to start that engine. It could have been working this way all the time or I mixed up the battery leads with another battery while moving things around. I'm guessing that it should be but need help thinking through the issue?

Jim,

I have a starting battery for each engine, with no direct connection to the other engine. My alternators each charge their own engine's battery, and I use (plan to use) battery combiners from each engine to the house batteries so that the house batteries get a charge after the start batteries get theirs. I have two battery switches connected so that I can swap batteries between engines or put them both on a single engine. I think that this covers most all needs, but if I had it to do over I would forget about the battery switches and just provide a jumper to jump-start one engine from the other. Oddly, this is the way the factory did it on many M's, but I didn't know that when I started. The combiners can be wired to a switch to provide the jumper. Anyway, its all at http://web.me.com/dougmrose/Doug_Roses_Website/%22Tin_Lizzie%22_files/Wiring_32_Marinette_new.pdf and the best information I have on the factory wiring is http://web.me.com/dougmrose/Doug_Roses_Website/Marinette_files/Marinette_Wiring_Generic.pdf I hope some of this helps but please post questions so that the guys who actually know stuff can chip in....

Thanks, Doug. Great info and diagrams. I think I will connect the altenator wire to the engine starting battery, it is now attached to the House battery. The dash voltage meter, for the engine in question, shows a reduced charging number (about 8 volts), I hope that is becuse of that engine not being connected to the proper battery. Eight volts, I think, is about what my converter sends to the batteries. My generator has an isolated battery to, hopefully, be able to start when engines won't. Idea being the generator could run the converter/charger and get us going. The M "crossover" dashboard switch connects two of the three batteries but I'm not sure which two.
Thanks again,
Jim

The "crossover" relay on the Marinettes is not automatic: if you forget to switch it on, you only charge the starting battery, and if you forget to switch it off, the starting battery is pulled down with the house battery at anchor. That's why I bought the combiners: http://store.hamiltonmarine.com/browse.cfm/victron-combiner-isolator-cyrix-i-12-24v-100a-730942/4,39648.html

I didn't realize that you have a generator. That changes things. You only need for one of three engines to start to get going. If you keep a short set of jumper cables on board, you will be able to start anything from any battery. Wish I had one. I hope your batteries aren't in the engine compartment....

I guess I don't have a "real" crossover switch, I have the push button crossover on the helm dash. And, yes, my batteries are on the forward engine room shelf.

That "Battery Parallelling Switch" is merely a low current, stay on without damage, solenoid switch. I installed a lighted toggle switch in place of the momentary push button on the helm and sometimes leave it ON to get the batteries recharged after an overnight. Good setup.
