As far as the Carters go, the newer ones must be alot better. Probably a rebuild will be just fine. The carburetors that were on my 72 were and are just a mess. Like you ,trundarules ; the 1409's s are the answer as far as i'm concern. Everyone has there liking of what is right for them and makes them happy. Hell if we all used the same thing how boring this site would be. Every member can give a testimonial to what works and not..... and thats for each and everyone who works on, fiddles with and just plane puts your heart and soul into their prize.

I remember a company that made variable CFM carbs back in the '80s . I can't remember the name, they had an eagle logo and were very boxy. Anyone using those on a BigM or other boat? My Carters seem fine on my '72. Don't know if they are original, but I think they perform fine. Might be that's what I'm used to on that boat, but both engines are super responsive and do whatever I ask. My "new" 1964 Owens Grenada has been repowered with Marine Power 350's that have throttle body fuel injection.. They run great..( I did say great!! didn't I?). Don't know what it would cost to convert my 318's on the Big M to TBI , but I bet it would be worth it.
