Years ago I was putzing around on my rag boat while on my mooring and I here an interesting conversation between the Coast Guard and a Lake Freighter, I happens that a 36' cruiser was coming back from the North Channel to Presque Isle in a thick fog at full throttle. The nut had GPS but no radar, God help any small fishing boat out there. Anyway he T-boned the Laker amidships. Seperated the deck from the hull and thankfully did not sink, although Darwin might dissagree with me.
Last year I was moored on a shipwreck in a medium fog waiting for my divers to surface and I heard a motor approaching, a few minutes latter I noticed it on my radar. After watching for a few more I can see it is headed directly for me and my divers. After 6 hails on channel 16 warning of a possible collision I see them make a course change. They never did answer my hails.
Guys when you're running in fog you can't hear a thing other than your own engines so please keep it under hull speed so you can react or get a radar! When sailing one can certainly appreciate hearing things approaching but with engines running a motorboater will never hear anything before the crash.
