If all goes well, I will have my 100 ton masters license by summer. Taking tests next week, lots of paperwork, then wait. I took the course through US Maritime Academy offered here in Ohio. Not an advertisement, but can't say enough about the instructor and course (contact me if you would like more details). The course was more difficult than I originally thought but very well worth it!

Just wondering how many more captains of various ratings are on the site and what they are doing with their rating if anything. Not sure what I will do with mine but I have wanted to get it for years. Plus any knowledge is good knowledge.

I took the 100 ton test but was only given a 25 ton license...my 9 years of lake freighter time was too long ago. Looking to get a letter of time to bump it up this year when I renew it. I have a couple of days but the master isn't interested in writing me my letter.

If anyone needs help with the paper work and regulations I have found Chuck Kalkuska sea K's licesning) very helpful. SEAKsLic@aol.com

I have my 25 ton, unlimited passengers, got it in '88, have not used it professionally, (still may) but have it in my "M", and proud to display it. It shows anyone that I have what it takes to be on the Great Lakes and have paid my dues in more ways than just taking the test. I believe too that it is a totally worthwhile objective for the pursuit of safe, intelligent, and informed boating. JAM

I have had my "six pack" license for over 36 years now. I used it once and I keep renewing it. TWIC card fees, physicals and blood tests costs but someday maybe I will use it. I owned and operated a commercial gill net boat on Lake Erie for 14 years, but the sportfishing supporters and license sellers put us out of business so they could have the fishery to themselves. We were told there was money to be made in sportfishing but the cost of a new boat, insurances, inspections, advertising, accounting, sales taxes, and whatever the government came up with made that a real loser. Especially with a twelve week season to make the money.

Yes my "OUPV" License looks great in it's oak frame. Had mine since 5/03. Put it on "Continuity" status in 2008. This allows me with a renewal qualification test to maintain my Captain's status. Got tired of the Consortium's "pee" tests and fees since I never followed through with my dream of delivering boats up and down the East Coast. Got to know a couple of "Delivery Captains" personally, what was I thinking, "Dream Job"??? Did learn a lot and I have to go back and refresh myself a couple times a year. If you don't use it, you lose it. Heavy on the, (I'm Fifty), losing it part!

Have my Great Lakes ticket but let it lapse years ago. No reason to keep it up. I did delieveries years ago and lost my arse. Now with drug tests etc. it would only be a dream to think one could actually make any money doing it just too much paperwork etc..

It looks nice in its frame bu,t unless you are planning on trying to make a career then find an outfit that will support your efforts with full time employement. I know the Charter fishing industry on the Great Lakes went into the bucket years ago. Few actually make any money.

Too much government intervention has taken a lot of former captains off the water.

Now in my 60's too late to go thru it again. The course is excellent and anyone that really wants to get into details I recommend it.

..."Too much government intervention has taken a lot of former captains off the water."

It hasn't done private industry--and job creation--much good either.

Thanks for the responses. I am not sure what I want to do with mine. Something part time and after retirement in March 2012. It was such an interesting class and a little knowledge (while possibly dangerous) is great for your confidence.
