Anyone have an opinion on using Rustoleum self etching paint prior to using Brightside?
Thanks,
Rob

With the effort required and expense of paint....in my opinion, I would stay with the interlux products and their application guidelines.

Whistle I used the rustoleum self etching primer on my walkways last spring as an experiment. Got the best finish I could've imagined and so far it has held up through countless washings and dragging stuff over it last year. I am heading to the boat today to do the same on the hatch's:d/ . Only time will tell and it is a lot cheaper and less time consuming than the interlux 2 part etching and primer . Finished with 4 coats of topside bright white. Just my opinion

Nothing beats real time field testing. If it works that is great!

There is a guy at Cape Marina with a custom 48' sailboat, all in aluminum. He bought the boat in bad shape, sanded the topsides, and finished with the mentioned etching primer and white Rustoleum topcoat. It was 2 years old when I saw it, and it looked beautiful. He rolled it, no spraying in marinas anymore. I on the other hand have had bad luck with Rustoleum products generally and I like to stick to Pettit or Interlux.

I recently was on a short cruise on a cruise ship. As we all know they are painting constantly. Rolling paint I asked the crew what they were using in those 5 gal buckets. Their response was Interlux Brightside. Roll and go!

Brightside runs $65 for a quart of primewash and $40 for a quart of topcoat. Rustoleum is $15 for a quart of primer and $60 for a GALLON of professional topcoat. Hmmmm.

Why is boat paint so expensive and tractor paint so cheap? Hmmmmm... They have to have similar characteristics. Also the local Sherwin Williams store distributes huge quantities of boat paint to a local tug and barge builder. This stuff is good. One worker cut open his hand on the wings of a bug encapsulated in the paint. I asked about buying some but they only sell it by the drum, no small quantities.

If you think boat paint is expensive, look at aviation paint (which is probably the same thing as tractor paint.)

Jeff

PS: I use Krylon and other brand aluminum etch spray paint on the old Merc outboards I restore. Seems to work okay, and that's tough service.
