As one of the guys actively involved in vetting new site members, trying to keep out the cyber wolves, I thought it might be useful to require folks to put their real names in their profile. And, their city/state. It seems that this is not digging too deeply into personal info in this internet world where the cloak of anonymity allows folks freely to attack anyone.

Reaction?

Would you, for example, go into your profile and bring it up to date if we had this policy?

Much of the other info that one could fill in (home page, etc), doesn't mean much or is not helpful in communicating with one another. It's there as boilerplate, aimed at sites where that is helpful to their members.

To All,

As U all know I’m one of the chosen few that can delete these cyber invaders & I totally agree with Joel, a great portion of my time on this site is dedicated to deleting these invaders just today alone I’ve banned 18 & it’s only noon plus I’ve lost count on the one I was only able to delete. Now these is starting to Pi$$ me off cause it cuts into my time of issuing bum info an facts to the members. As I stated in a previous post they don’t know that Capt. Insane-O will not relent one Iota. This isn’t the only site that is getting bombarded with these Cyber BUMS two other sites are getting it just as bad. I’ve learned a few thing since I’ve been granted this task but can’t give any info as not to abet these Jerks. So if by chance U get banned a few members have my PH# get hold of one of them Like Sorry Dog, Joel, Jeff, Pitt.Stan & I’m sure Joe H. has it also, or if U’d like PM me & if U sound legit I’ll PM it to U. One other thing that would help a lot would be to log on & not use the guest 2 sign in. I know I know U don’t want us to think U are a Marinette site JUNKY but what the hell We R what We R have a Great day & most of all THINK SPRING U notice there R no smiley faces in this post cause it’s nothing to grin about

I happen to like Gmail...only because I don't really know about any better email. Any suggestions on best email acct??

Doesn't AOL offer free e mail? You could just open another account and use it for this site.. Might be kind of a pain, but if it keeps the potted meat crowd out, could be worth it.

I don’t think that name and state would be bad as long as it is only displayed to the administrators.

While I have no problem posting name and state since I have done that already; how does that stop spam?

Obviously it has no apparent effect to limit the problem?

I guess the only way would be a detailed info (like internet shopping sites) and then only way in would be through registration and password to access the posts archives etc.

By doing that that would certainly make it more difficult for spammers. They would not be able to view any of the info without registering first. Currently I am assuming they cruise the site then register with false ID info etc.

Those that wanted to spam still would get in right?

Dave: got your thoughtful PM and will repeat the summary of your suggestion here: that is, to include an HIN number in the signup. That's fine. Don't know if I can change the form, though - will check.

My reason for insisting on a name/town ID was just to try to slow down the heavy flow of spammer registration attempts. Of course, a miscreant won't give their right name... but it forces them to fill out additional info that may slow them down a tad. As Norm notes, it's a major annoyance for him and me. They are fairly easy to spot from their email addresses and web sites (some form of viagara/penis enhancement/cheap meds sites). It's automated and there will never be a way to stop it, just slow it a wee bit. Viva la webbe!

Only sure way I know, is tell them that new members have to buy do-nuts for everyone.
If they say " can't " because they spent all thier money on parts, paint, gas, moorage, and bait, and only have a bit the wife doesn't know about for beer; then you know they are a boat owner and one of us.
