Browsing Amazon I found Marine Paint made by Rustoleum. Cheap .. $15 Qt for topsides, $14 Qt for metal primer. They also carry other marine coatings. I think I will order some just to test. They don't have many cans left. I got a Prime account so shipping is free for me. Almost to good to be true. Less than half price of other paints and two days free shipping right to my door. Hope they keep more in stock.

P.S. While I was posting here they sold out of both white and blue topcoat. I did order the metal primer. You snooze you lose. There are other suppliers listed but they cost a few bucks more and shipping is not free.

Steel or aluminum primer? If I remember correctly, Rustoleum Paint used a fish oil primer as it held on good with steel.

I believe your right on with your point jimski2 on Rustoleum primer. Fish oil for steel, and was excellent . Really don't know if they make one for aluminun but ; Yooper it couldn't hurt to call the company and check.

Rust-oleum has an aluminum primer, a white metal primer and a "Marine" metal primer. Confusing Huh.. They also have a rusty metal primer with fish oil in it. That stuff is made to soak into rusty steel. It won't work as well on a clean substrate. I ordered a qt of the Marine metal primer. I am going to prime my steel rudders with it. I will order some marine topcoat to experiment with. It will take 2-4 weeks delivery on my Amazon account until they stock up. Then a prime account customer gets free 2 day delivery.

I have started painting on my project 32' with another paint system. The flybrdge, cowls, cockpit and cabin sides are done. My paint can not be rolled. I have a good HVLP turbine system but I want to roll and tip the rest. I hate all the taping and covering required to spray and my brush work is bad.

Tinting is still an issue so I may have to finish with the paint I have. If I can get the rust-oleum tinted I might be able to roll it on the decks. Rust-oleum also has a non-skid additive. My system calls for throwing sand.

I have a project 28' that is ready for the water but needs paint. Here special tinting is not an issue.

Great info. on the Rustoleum , had on idea they carried primer for aluminun and white metal. I've been checking all the posts and threads on painting to get a heads up on what to do. I saw Tims boat and how nice the rolled and tip came out that he did and believe thats what i'll do on the deck and everything thats flat. Got all the spray equip. i need from my brothers 2 rod shops after he passed away and think i'll do the water line up with it. Painting is not my forte. I take it that tinting the paint for all the blue will be a challenge? Alot of info on painting on the site and i print out everything that looks pertinent and will help.
Need to get a trailer this year, i hope! Have a friend with a new large metal building were i can do some work on the old girl next winter.

Just a tip FYI:

Polyurethane paints are NOT to be sprayed unless fresh air breathing device is used.

There are no respirator filters approved for spraying polyurethane marine coatings.

Some more of the Rust-oleum is in stock at Amazon so a qt of 207001 Marine Topside Paint, Oyster White, $13.83 and a qt of 207016 Marine Metal Primer, $14.93 is on the way. Now I got to round up some different rollers and find my good brush. I got a roll of aluminum flashing to try it on. If it looks good I will try and figure out how to get it tinted and may try out the anti-slip additive.

By the way, for those of you who live up in the boonies where at lot of things you need are 40 miles away, that Amazon prime account with free 2-day shipping comes in handy.

I'm interested in how durable it is. Waiting for your feedback.

Durable might take a year or so to find out , or more. But price , if it lasts and who knows, might be well worth it? No question can be answered on paint on an order. If one has used this paint and knows it's longtivity on our boats i guess its a good try. Who knows might be the a good deal.

Myself I’d call rust-oleum & ask a tech about the use of their marine paints & explain throughly the plans for their product? It’d B ashamed to go thru all that work & in a season or 2 find out that U’d have to do it all over again. Brick wall Sometimes being penny wise & dollar foolish isn’t the best route. Or as Yoop stated just do a test area. Just my ½ penny’s worth Anxious

I painted my old Mobile Home at the Fish Camp with Rustoleum over the aluminum siding. Appearance and life was fine. The problem was black mold spots required an annual power washing with clorox. Last year I coated over it with a Home Depot paint with a biocide to control mold developement. I will see how this looks this year.

Paint is fairly simple stuff. There are formulations for every purpose. Paint companies charge what the market will bear. Are boat owners are getting ripped off? Why is tractor paint so cheap and boat paint so high? Each has to have the same characteristics, UV protection, resistance to solvents etc. The big difference is farmers won't pay what boat owners will. Rust-oleum knows how to make "everyman" paint and now has a line of enamels formulated for boats that can be rolled and tipped and should be pretty safe to use. I'm going to test it out. I can get fresh supplies shipped up here as I need it with two day lag time. If I could get paint from the local Tractor Supply in something other than bright orange, yellow or green I'd test it. I guess I could rename my boat the Deere-Cat and go two tone.

Rust-oleum followup is waiting for global warming to kick in up here in da UP. It's 35 degrees today and it snowed yesterday.

I found that some local home centers carry the some of the Marine paints at lower prices than Amazon. I got a gloss oyster white which has a ivory tint and a gloss white ($11.99 qt Menard's) that I may be able to mix and match to my Marinette Ivory color.

I found another darn Rust-oleum metal primer. Rust-oleum Latex Aluminum Primer ($8.98 qt Home Depot). Water cleanup and thinning. Good for aluminum or galvinized metal. It is an Acrylic Resin which can be top coated with the alkyd enamel based boat paint after 24 hours. I like it because it has got to be safer than a solvent thinned product. The Rust-olum Marine metal primer I have thins with mineral spirits - not that dangerous. It says it cuts down the need for multiple topcoats. If I decide to stick with it I can still use the latex primer to touch up my trailers.
