OEM distributor..

Ordered a couple of rotors for my 1985 318s. Tried putting them on and the shaft is bigger than the rotor hole. Called Dave at Hurrikain Marine...he is baffled too. He is researching for me a bit. He says there are only two type caps and rotors and I ordered the correct one. Maybe they packaged them wrong? Think....He hasn't had any complaints like mine.

Here's the cap and rotors. http://www.hurrikain.com/Chrysler-Ignition-Systems.htm

Do any of you have input on this?

Do you know something we don't?

I know they made some engine changes in 1985..

By the way Dave is a super guy if you need parts. He follows up with his customers if you have a question.

A couple things.. If you have the screw down caps you have the rotor with the spring piece on top and if you have the clip on caps you have the flat top rotors. So if the new one matches the old one, it might be just a real tight fit. Sounds like a no brainer but make sure the flat spot on the rotor ID is lined up with the flat spot on the shaft. And like I said, sometimes they are a tight fit.. But don't use the 5lb ignition sledge. Let us know what happens.

Well it you can't find a cap and rotor for the distributor that fits , if it was me i would remove the distributor and take it out and have an Marine or automotive dealer look at it and have it fitted with the right one. If you are ordering on line, will save a lot of time and money: will learn about what you got and need. I know you have the the original electronic ignition so i take it there are no points. My old distributors were a nighmare, for i had no idea what was right for rotor and cap. May not be what the marine sites want to sell but where right for what i needed.

Good god that sounds like alot of stuff waiting to break, all that removal and such. Just look on the distributor for a number or a metal tag with the manufacturer name on it. Get a mirror to get to the sides you can't see. You had a rotor and cap that fit didn't you? Take it to the local auto store or machine shop and have them mic the I.D. There has to be easier ways of finding out other than removal of the entire distributor.
How about a pic? And sometimes the wrong part does get put in the box ..

Not many tags i've seen on a distributor but i don't have them new electronic ones . Not hard at all to take out and reinstall and time. To reiterate, you can learn alot by doing the work on you Boat.

Mine are 1972 318's and have little tags or badges on them that say Prestolite. And one of the best things you learn by working on your boat is how not to do it next time. I'd try the path of least resistance first, worth a shot. It's cool to take out the distribs but if you can easily avoid it.. Less chance of something else going wrong. Not trying to be a jerk, but if you don't need to pull the axle to change a tire, don't.

Sage advice! Though Mopar distributors only go in one of two ways--right or 180 degrees out--you still have to re-time them.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm working with David at Hurrikain to get the right rotor. I have the numbers off the distributor and the cap. Got to get back to the boat to see if rotor has part number on it.

Wish I could just walk down to the dock and get the part number Not talking , but I live about two hours away Brick wall

I was under the impression that there are only two types of rotors for the 318's....so I don't know what is going on.

."I was under the impression that there are only two types of rotors for the 318's"

Me too, for that's all I've seen. Of course, if someone swapped out your distributor for something else....
