Thanks: 4 times
I'm looking at installing 2 large basin type sinks inside the "kitchen area" on my project houseboat. There are 2 thru hole fittings on the Starboard side of the hull AT the water line. It is 3/4" diam. See the pictures dated March 6, 2011 on the photo site linked below. Pics are more towards the end of the slide show. I don't know what they were used for originally (I was thinking about contacting Mr. Althouse about that.) I intend on having 2 drains (one for each sink) since they are large sinks. Each sink drain will flow straight out as grey water out thru those 2 thru hull fittings. All other thru hull fittings have been welded closed. The questions are: For those larger sinks and more water to be drained, is it recommended to increase the size diam. of those thru hull fitting? I was going to go with two 1" Maleron fittings for those sink drain thru hull fittings. Another question is are those fittings considered below the water-line or above. They actually look to be AT the water line. Will water gush in if there is a leak in any of those lines since those 2 thru hull fittings are right at the water line (see the pics I took.) I will probably run another line with a diverter valve on there to drain into a seperate grey water tank in case someday I am stationed at a marina or it becomes an issue of not being able to drain slightly soapy (so called grey) water overboard. The thru hull fitting question is now a concern because I am to start painting soon (the boot stripe and the above the waterline hull) and that has to be kind of figured out now. Thanks for any suggestions. Roger, Mt. Dora, Fl

I would strongly advise you to install a shower sump arrangement with a pump to send that water overboard thru a fitting that's way above the waterline. Too much risk in doing the other way. If the sump pump fails, you'd end up with water in the bilge (that the bilge pump would handle), but if the hose on that below waterline fitting failed....

I've got a boat like yours and mine has aluminum tube formed into a 90 degree "elbow" thats welded to the hull and sweeps upward putting your connections above the waterline. If you have a straight thru hull fitting you are right they could fail and leak. Joe

One thing that has been a problem for me: When you put the hose onto your thruhull fitting, you making a neck-down where the inside diameter goes from the ID of the hose to the ID of the barb on your thruhull fitting. This is a great place for stuff to catch and plug up the drain. Usually I can clear it by plunging at the sink, but a couple of times I have had to put a snake down the drain to get the water to flow again.

I think a cure for this would be to use a threaded Marelon thruhull fitting, and screw an elbow female 90 degree threaded hose barb to it, set the barb facing up, and then tighten the thruhull nut. You can get both the elbow and the threaded fitting at Hamilton Marine: http://store.hamiltonmarine.com/browse.cfm/elbow-female-1-90-deg-hecf-16-marelon-hose-barb-155801-/4,19917.html

The elbow lifts the hose up above the waterline some. You will be able to use a good reinforced hose since it will not have the 90 deg bend to get to the fitting.

I have not done this yet, but it is on the list of little fixes.....

Be aware that the threads on the thruhulls and on the correct fitting are straight pipe threads, not the usual tapered or NPT threads. You cannot mix the two.
