One thing that has been a problem for me: When you put the hose onto your thruhull fitting, you making a neck-down where the inside diameter goes from the ID of the hose to the ID of the barb on your thruhull fitting. This is a great place for stuff to catch and plug up the drain. Usually I can clear it by plunging at the sink, but a couple of times I have had to put a snake down the drain to get the water to flow again.
I think a cure for this would be to use a threaded Marelon thruhull fitting, and screw an elbow female 90 degree threaded hose barb to it, set the barb facing up, and then tighten the thruhull nut. You can get both the elbow and the threaded fitting at Hamilton Marine: http://store.hamiltonmarine.com/browse.cfm/elbow-female-1-90-deg-hecf-16-marelon-hose-barb-155801-/4,19917.html
The elbow lifts the hose up above the waterline some. You will be able to use a good reinforced hose since it will not have the 90 deg bend to get to the fitting.
I have not done this yet, but it is on the list of little fixes.....
Be aware that the threads on the thruhulls and on the correct fitting are straight pipe threads, not the usual tapered or NPT threads. You cannot mix the two.
