d'oh! Brain fart, Please tell me if this is okay or what type of valve do I need. Need to replace a couple off shut off valves. Is it okay to use brass through hulls on our aluminum hulls? Thanks

A full-ported bronze ball valve is what to buy. It threads into that (??) non-conductive piece that came with the boat. Long as the valve is isolated, bronze is fine.

Tim,

As long as your intake strainer is properly isolated it shouldn't matter what type valve U use. I’d suggest a Ball valve type 90* & it’s off they also have a lock for them so they can't B accidently shut off . U can get them at the likes of Home Depot, Lowes even your local hardware a lot cheaper than at a marine outlet Whistle

You can get 316 stainless ball valves from Allen Machine in Chattanooga. the website is www.allenmachineco.com, but it is useless, you will have to call them and ask about Stainless Steel 1000 PSI Ball Valves. They come in 2-piece and in take-apart 3-piece. The three-piece valves can be taken apart if they jam up, the 2-piece ones are the usual and cannot.

Bring your wallet!

Stainless steel; 1,000 psi rated? Sheesh. Have to dig up at least three of my coffee cans.

If memory serves (I am a long way from the boat) I bought 1" NPT 3-piece ball valves for the engine water intakes because the bronze ones were frozen up. They are currently listed by Allen at $30.22 each. The more usual 1" NPT 2-piece ball valves are $21. I like the 3-piece valves, but most would want the cheaper ones. I don't know where to get bronze valves for $21. You can get Apollo bronze ball valves on Amazon for $19, but they have chrome-plated balls, and I would rather have the machined stainless. Bronze is an alloy of tin and copper, but all kinds of things are called "bronze" so you have to be sure to get marine parts. Marelon valves are more expensive, nearly $100 for the 1" Forespar valve, although I think they would be excellent.

I'm sorry I can't give you the prices in "coffee cans" but my Economist doesn't list the weekly value of "coffee cans" like it does gold, pounds sterling, and baht.
