Thanks Jeff for the posting the article. I read it last year when i installed my new pumps. David always seems to be able to explain the 5 W's of things. It's how i installed mine. I have 2 pumps and a spare that i can attach to any battery from any boat if needed. I feel like its a safety net but who knows.
One problem i haven't gotten rid of is when i come off of plane and the boat sets down the front through hull for bilge lets water come back into the bilge through the tubing. Not alot but just enough to aggravate. The tubing hits the v-berth bunk . Just can't get a good high point in the hose to stop it. Another item for the spring list, never seems to get shorter.

I was anchored out to a tether hooked to a sunk engine block. It rained a lot and I stayed home. The boat was listing with water just up to the sole. The batteries were dead. I had to hump my batteries back to the shore, charge them up and put them back. Started the boat and pumped it out. Next week more rain and the same thing happened. Guess what! Plugged up cockpit scuppers! I was operating a big bath tub. I cleaned the scuppers and rolled a rubber rug over the cockpit hatch. The rain will not sink me now.

According to that article our stock 32' are about one 1500 pump short. I got a diaphram pump I was going to rig up to pump lake water for deck washdown and use as a backup pump. Checking out the thruhulls is very important. I got some 25 year old sun damaged drain outlets that need replacing. I was attaching a new bilge hose and the thruhull shattered and came off in my hand.

Bottom line, the first thing to do is check out each and every hole in your boat,

Mark try putting a loop in the hose. I have done this in the past with good success. The only down fall to this is it traps some water in the loop. If you set it up right there won't be much and it will quit running back in.

I was told that a bilge pump should be piped straight up as far as it will go, usually just below the cabin sole, then an easy bend and downhill to the fitting. That way, the minimum amount of water stays in the hose when the pump shuts off, and water that gets into the thruhull from outside drains back out.
