I have a 1975 32 express and need to rebuild some rotted cabinet drawers and wondered if mahogany plywood at the lumber store is the same thing that was used on our boats, or is it some kind of marine plywood with a mahogany veneer on one side??? Or does it even matter???
thanks for any help

On my 86 I believe its regular plywood with Teak veneer outside and what appears to be Mahogany veneer inside.
I think on the 70's it was all Mahogany veneer. No need for marine plywood unless its in bilge or cockpit, imo.

I needed to match some luan wall panels to the rest of the woodwork in my project 28'. I got a bunch of those little foil packs of different stains at the home center and a can of Helmsman. I cut up some test boards and stained them. The most promising test pieces I varnished. I picked out the best match and just stained and varnished the whole 4 x 8 sheets. You may be trying for a teak look but the stain choice depends on the color of the wood you start with. With mine, colonial maple was the final choice. Finishing the wood before cutting it sounds wastfull but it is easier. Use up all your varnish, it doesn't keep. After cutting I covered the edges and painted the backs. You don't need real marine plywood unless you are building a wooden boat and are planking frames. Real exterior glue is good enough.
