OK so my boat had been painted 3 times before and the paint had cracked all th way to the aluminum. I have sanded all of it off to the original yellowish brown primer or etchant in some areas and to bare metal in others. I have read the post, but wonder what some of the products you have used to fill/fair the windshield area.

Also who makes a great etchant and high build primer.

And which one goes on first when applying to bare aluminum.

Thanks

It may be a good idea to contact the manufacturer of the primer and the final finish paint and ask them what type of fairing compound they recommend.

I know the Imron paint has lifted/bubbled in some small places where there is fairing compound on my hull. I do not know the manufacture of the fairing.

Also verify the curing time for the fairing before painting over it.

There may also be a problem with the new paint reacting with the original factory fairing. Perhaps be sure all fairing is cured and primed before final paint.

I used a "standard" for deep cracks, Interlux Watertite Epoxy. It shrunk and was hard to sand level and the topcoat lifted off. It is still on the boat but If I ever use epoxy again on the topsides I will use a homebrew mixture with microballoons. I'll also try the technique of sanding epoxy into any bare aluminum. What did work well on shallow paint cracks, pinholes and rough surface was Evercoat Easysand polyester finishing putty. It has a good etchant built in. Expensive. Drys in 20 minutes so use a little at a time and get one of those paper sheet palettes and plenty of disposable spreaders. What I missed most with my system was a good sandable hi-build primer. When you find one let us know.

I filled a pile of screw holes in the overhead with JB Weld. The color's right and if you wire brush it into the metal you can even get a good bond. Swatches of newspaper on the underside kept it from dripping through before it was set.

I have used 3M Premium Marine Filler compound with decent results, at least under 1 part primer and paint.

Thanks, Craig

I have been using WEST system epoxy with microballoons as a filler for years. It sticks, sands well, and leaves a good surface for primer. Under no circumstances use a polyester based resin, get two-part epoxy.

Several companies make high-build, sandable, epoxy primer. Make sure it is all three. I use Petit usually but Interlux makes a good primer too, I just get a better price on Petit.

Doug when I was at the West Marine store, they told me the West epoxy was for fiberglass boats. Did the guy misunderstand me??

Naturally! All they know is Phony-Glass boats!

The epoxy will stick fine IF the surface below is properly prepped. That means sanding to bare metal and etching.

I'll second the West System Epoxy recommendation. Its what I used on my boat and has stuck w/ no problem. I recommend you pick up one of the West System guides as the provide very good information on use of their products on both fiberglass and metals.

WEST system is not a product of west marine, it is made by the gougeon brothers in wisconsin. most salesmen at west don't know that. It stands for Wood Epoxy Saturation Technique, but it works well on metal if used properly. I once used it to repair a transmission on my pickup that had a chunck knocked out of the bottom. It lasted for many years, held oil and everything.

To All,

May I suggest that if U R going to use the West System to purchase their pump system applicators they cost about 20 $ but give U the exact amount of resin & harder with no guess work. Also if U R going to use West System where it’ll B exposed to U V ray add in the U V protector agent. If U R a novice on the use west System products Google their site & down load their info it’ll save U a great amount of time & headaches by following their procedure steps of HWW&W. I 3rd the motion on the use of West System Epoxy. Applause

Thanks everyone for your input. When I finish painting this boat, I'll post pictures and a list of products I used. Then we'll see how long it last, fingers crossed, etc. etc.
