I changed port amp meter to volt meter last year and in the process of changing the starboard now. Does anyone have suggestion on how to rewire the leads that went to amp meter. I can figure it out but would be good to know if I, doing it right. The power to the switch went thru the amp meter. Had to move that wire over to the switch.
Thanks, Wayne

Amp meters measure flow (amps) and must be wired in one of the lines right next to the battery (before all the taps start coming off the leads to the battery) to show flow and usually a heavy wire, same size as the largest conductors in the circuit. Volt meters show Voltage which is pressure (if you look at it as a plumber would) and must compare/measure line a to b (positive to negative) and must be wired across the line or neg to pos. and these wires can be very small as they just compare voltage, and do not conduct the total amperage of the circuit, and can be wired anywhere in the circuit between the lines. Your AMP meters were inline on the postive. Remove meter from line and splice the wires together.

My fuse panel and other helm power feeds come from the red/white terminal, solid red goes back to the battery. You should use a securily mounted barrier terminal strip or I have seen some using a small bolt and locknut to bind them all together then big heat shrink to protect this very sensitive splice would be another way of doing it.

Either way the wire fom one amp meter terminal needs to be connected to the wire on the other ampmeter terminal and be prevented from shorting out to ground.

If you are replacing the ammeter with a voltmeter, then put both of the wires that were on the ammeter onto the positive terminal of the voltmeter. Then add a wire from the negative terminal of the voltmeter to the black ground. Probably, the same black ground as the other gauges will do.

The best solution would be to take the wire from the voltmeter's negative terminal back to the battery negative or to the engine block. There is a voltage drop on the ground wire used by the other gauges, and so the voltmeter might read a little low. Mine does.
