Well I am ready to start posting pictures of my "New" (to me) BigM . It is a 1959 Family Cruiser. It is almost all original (Sole Replaced 10+ years ago) and the Gray Marine 109 runs but needs a diaphram in the fuel pump.

The boat was on Watts Barr lake near Spring City TN. The previous owner purchased the boat in 1983 and Cruised it down from Knoxville to Spring City. It has been pier side for a few years now and these shots are the first time the previous owner had ever seen the boat out of the water. PO husband past away a while back and she was glad to see the boat going to someone who will be fixing it up. Owner before her was last named Furbeck from the Knoxville area. I have a Gray Marine parts manual I will be scanning in in a few days and will post as well.

We were going to pull it Saturday, but the wind was crazy. 2 foot plus chop and 30 mph winds made that a no go. We went back at it on Sunday and got her loaded early. Nice calm with a slow breeze made it nice.

The boat over all is in great shape considering it is 52 years old. Wood will need to be stripped and sealed, but no major rot except a few trim pieces on the afterdeck. Side walls on the afterdeck are bowed and will need to be replaced. but I will clean and paint for now so we can get the boat in the water again. The hull still has part of two anodes. I will get some pictures of it. The hull looks good, just needs cleaning and painting.

My trailer will need some work, but the guy that built it did it all with pictures. So I can tweak it to get it dialed in the rest of the way.

The boat does need TLC, but I am sure I will give it plenty of that and plenty if this $$$$$ Whistle .

I am going to get the safety stuff covered and get her cleaned and painted (Blue hull and White up top).

I will post a bunch of pictures on my MS Live site as I go.

I have posted more pictures in the MS Live Site of the inside of the BigM I'll get some of the bottom in a few days. I spoke with my trailer builder and he said to drop the trialer (Boat on it) and he would get it fixed up for me. I am also going to get him to add guide poles for me.

I also love this shot. This was her home since 1983 until April 17 2011

I got all excited the other day and told my buddy he needed to come over and see my "new" boat. He quickly humbled me by asking a simple question. He asked, Is it the kind that sits in the water or the kind that sits in the yard? I chuckled and told him in the yard .... for now !!

This boat is in obvious need of painting. But the paint that is there is not flaking off. I really do not want to strip the boat to the hull if the paint base is holding. I would like to clean it really good and sand prep and fair a few spots where the filler is cracked. Anyone got input on this ? Should I scrap this idea and strip it to the hull? I did have a quater sized spot on the belly of the boat where it looks like we bumped on somthing and a small piece of paint came off. But the hull below that was shinney and new. I know I will need to do prep work on that spot so paint will stay put.

Surface sanding should do it. That's the way my yard did it during extensive repaint 12 yrs ago. The only spots they screw up (really badly) were those few places requiring sanding to bare metal. They didn't etch/prime properly or promptly and the paint peeled in those spots.

Hi Mike,

I just realized the other day that you had bought a vintage Marinette. Congratulations! The '59 is really interesting. I have never seen another like it.

A lot more modern than my '54. Much more "airy" with the full side windows. Much more trim and racy looking (hah, hah) with the rolled edge on the roof and cut away walls on the aft deck. It looks like Marinette abandoned the v drive after a few years and moved the cabin door off center.

The Gray Marine engine looks like it might be a Hercules. The Chris Craft Model K or KL would be very similar (maybe identical) if so. I've got a bunch of CC manuals and a good part source.

It looks like generally she is in good shape. I don't see all the interior rot and water damage that I'm fighting right now.

What's the length and beam of the boat? It looks like the hull might be pretty similar to the older models.

Ya know, I have looked at the pictures of John's boat before. But, I never connected it to yours - I guess because of all of the modern modifications he has made. So do you have twin Suzukis ordered??Angel

Mike, I take it that is your boat on Boatdesign site. I like the idea of the extended transom on her. Nice job on the work. Keep us informed on the progress.

No actually that is John Dyer's boat and the shot from the Great Lakes event shows it after the mods. Of course I gathered all of that info from the net as I researched what I wanted in a boat and that hull is where I landed because I will trailer my boat to different waterways and did not want to large a platform and wanted to be road legal in every state.

This forum is loaded with information on painting Marinettes. You have to choose two systems. One for topsides and one for bottom paint. The key is compatibity with aluminum and any old sound coatings you choose to overlay. This site is a good starting primer on boat painting. http//www.marinepainting.net/topside-painting.html

Sorry Mike, i guess i just didn't read the post correctly. Went to your pics and took another look. She's in really great shape ,that gentleman must have loved her to keep her up. Going to make a great boat. If it was at Spring City Marina, I don't know how i missed her. I've been on the lake since 77 and can't remember her. Wanda said she has seen it. Probably too many Bud Lites cause, would have surely stopped and looked. again, with a little TLC she's going to come back to life.
