Put some life in the old M. Got the fuel and carb rebuilt and fired it up today and started adjusting it. It will need some electrical work and for sure a voltage regulator. Coil got so hot I could not touch it. I ran it for about 30 minutes. It is an old BB-1 Carter carb and I may have to take it back off and see if I picked up some trash (or left some in there) becuase it is not wanting to low speed idle to good.

Link to a few photos of Carb and Fuel Pump rebuild

As I suspected. I changed the bottom half of the old BB-1 Carb out and put it all back together and fired the BigM up and she ran great !!! Let her set and idle for about 30 minutes. I ran the throttle up and down to make sure that the base setttings are good for that carb. I want to have her sit at idle for at least and hour before I drop her back in the water. I have the water feeds hooked to the motor so everything is staying nice and cool. I am going to start scrubbing her down next week for exterior paint and then she is going back in the water !!

Started cleaning the boat up today. Man it was way dirtier than I thought!!! Got the power washer to it with some Super Cleaner in the mix and it does a great job getting the grit off. I got the top side done and will be workin on the hull and cockpit today. Paint next !!

Cleanup pics and a short video of the power washer at work.

1959 Running walk around view

Got a shot of the boat at idle and did a 360 view. We got her cleaned up for painting. I am going to need to do some fairing before I paint the hull. I love the lines on this boat.

Like the video, Mike. Good to hear the old flathead "clickin em off"! It's giving me some more motivation. I am gaining some momentum with my '54. I finally got my engine block back from the machine shop - just before I had to leave for TN. But now that I'm down here in TN, I've got a lot of interior wood fabrication done and some varnishing.

My Hercules had a Zenith carb mounted. It is in really bad shape. Cast iron carb body full of water - Yup pile of rust. I think I will end up replacing it.

I need to do an update and post some pics.

A lot of Z's on FleaBay

http://motors.shop.ebay....amp;_nkw=zenith+updraft

Should be able to get what you need.

Also give Kim a call at 630-485-5007 for GrayMarine parts. Tell him Mike in Alabama sent ya.

They bought an old parts disto and have a lot of old parts. Got my rebuild kit for carb and fuel pump from them.

You will for sure want to rebuild the feul pump. I think it is the same on your motor and mine. Pay attention to the way it comes a part. The linkage inside the pump that comes from the cam to the diafram is easy to reverse. I did this on mine and thought something was hokey and when I put it in the cam was pushing it out and could have cause the block wall to crack or bust. I did bend one of the small pins inside the pump but I just put the old one back in since it was not to worn out. Also watch how the springs (2 of them) come out. Take pictures as you go and lay the pieces out in a line.

On the carb, make sure you have cleaned out ALL passageways in the carb. I could not get my small brass pieces out and when I first rebuilt the carb had issued on the low end. I put another bottom end on the carb and it fixed the issue. I am sure trash was inside somewhere I could not get.

So you may need to round up another rebuildable Z carb. But at least Z is still in business and fleabay seemed to have quite a few.

Looking forward to seeing you 54 running !!!

Glad the 59 could give you a boost. Noe if I can get inspired to paint in this dang heat !!!

I hear ya there! One of the biggest challenges to my varnishing this week has been to keep the sweat from dripping onto the freshly varnished surface!

Thanks for the tips and links. I am watching a couple of appropriate sized carbs on eBay. As you mentioned, Zenith is still in business. I can buy a newly manufactured carb as a direct replacement for mine for $125. Not too bad. It is aluminum bodied, though. I'm leaning towards a NOS cast iron carb from eBay. Here's question - I see that the inlet on your carb is angled upwards. My old carb is the same way. All of the replacements have a horizontal inlet. I suspect this is specific to a marine application. I wonder why???

I have been getting all of my parts and advice from Robert Henkel, Scripps Marine Engine Co. on Harsens Island up by me in MI. http://www.chris-craft-parts.com/index.html He's been great, parts are in stock and pretty cheap for most things.

My boat had an electric puel pump installed. I don't recall seeing a block off plate for a mechanical one? I'll have to take a look when I head back north.

Make sure if using electric to have it tied to a oil pressure activated switch and not just to the hot side. That way if you have a fire and you shut down the motor the fuel with turn off also.

I am working to get a steel line for mine from the pump to the carb. It has been harder than I tought to get all the fittings rounded up.

Click Here to see Interior photos

I have to get into gear on the interior DD got me motivated. I have pulled a lot of things loose and the inside is in good shape over all. I found out that the paneling in aluminum 20 guage about over wood sheets. It has a coating on it to look like wood. Go figure. Anyway I have a shot where I sanded on it. I am going to rough it up and paint it. I only found a little rot around the port windshield. SO only 1 board to replace so far. I also found that one of the nav lights is also a cigarette lighter. I am going to pull all the cabinets out and re layout the inside and re-incorporate as much of the mahogany doors and stuff as I can. I have a "new" tranny in route since mine has a problem with reverse. More to come .... Still no one committed to painting for me yet !! But I am still looking.

Also I see a lot of the parts have the #141 on them. Has anyone else seen this kind of thing? I wonder if it was becuase they were assembling so many boats. This could be boat 141 of 1959 ... Maybe

Hi Mike,

I had not checked in here for a while. I have been home in MI for a while, and I haven't done much on the BigM . I have made some progress, and I'll try to update on my thread.

Interesting pics of your interior - thanks. It was kind of surprising to me to see the aluminum panels instead of plywood like mine. Would save me a bunch of varnishing!Brick wall Many of the other details are the same as mine, but quite a bunch is different. It looks like they simplified the construction in a number of places. For instance, my forward bulkhead was all wood and constructed with tenon and mortise joints and the 1/2" mahogany plywood fitted into a slot in the solid mahogany frame. A bit of a project to rebuild.

I don't recall seeing any assembly numbers on mine anywhere, and I have torn into just about everything. It is apparently something they started a little later. BTW, have you found a mfg data plate anywhere?

Good Luck!

Here are some pics of my rudder removal. I am going to replace it with a stainless setup. Does anyone know where I can source the rubber boot and also the shaft bearing ( Seems to be fiberglass or something like it) ?

1959 Marinette Rudder Parts and Removal

Also note the hanger bearing bracket. It is actually loose and seems to have been repaired at some point by just scabbing a few plates on each side. Can I just replace the bolts or should I get it welded up once I have the new motor in? Leaning towards a weld job unless this is a common fix .... which I kind of doubt. :)

The shaft bearing is called a cutlass bearing measure yours and make to order a non metallic one,the rudder stuff also needs to be non metallic. There are several on line sources for these I forgot where I got mine from.

Ok on the cutlass bearing. But mine did not have any kind of stuffing in it anywhere. It was in the water when I bought it and was not leaking at all. What you see in those pics is what came out of the rudder shaft log when I took it out.

That looks like a packing nut on the top of the shaft. The packing might have just deteriorated. On some earlier Marinettes, the top of the steering shaft assembly was several inches above the waterline. So, it will not leak while sitting still. If you run the boat and get the waterline to rise, you might notice some water coming in then.

Hi Mike,

That rudder shaft set-up looks identical to the one on my '54. Mine has a 1" shaft and uses a 1" x 1-5/8" x 4" cutless bearing. The stuffing box also appears to be the same as mine. I think it uses 1/4" packing. Here's a good source for parts. http://www.deepblueyachtsupply.com/ and http://www.glen-l.com/inboard-hardware/.

I made a new rudder for my boat from stainless steel too. My original was all aluminum including the badly bent rudder shaft.

The prop shaft strut is sort of unusual looking. From the pictures, I wonder if it is a factory set-up. Is the strut portion where the cutless bearing is located made of aluminum? Since it's bolted up, I wonder if it is bronze? My boat is totally different in this area. The prop shaft is much shorter and the strut is shorter too. The bearing housing is basically just welded into the keel.

Good Luck!

My 1965 Fisherman has exactly the same interior as your boat. I'm interested in the upper bunk over the settee as mine is missing. Wondering how the side next to the cabin wall mounts. any pics greatly appreciated

Thanks,

I can hook you up on that upper bunk. I don't think I am going to put it back in the 59. I am going to do about a 90% changeup on the cabin layout. Probably only keep the "wheel door" cabinet and recycle the drawers into a new layout. We will see though.

Got the engine out of my doner boat today. 79 Hammond (Guy that created Glastron) 165 Mercruiser Inline 6. I also have a tranny setup I got off CL. I am pulling the stuff apart and will get some pictures of everything. I am going to go with a 1:1 tranny so I need to trade off/sell the 1.52:1 that I have now.

We will see how it goes.

Jim where are you located?
