Changed the impeller on one of my raw water pumps...used a spare that I kept in my junk drawer for 5 or 7 years...guess what...wouldn't pump....

Put a brand new impeller in and guess what>> It pumped!!!!

always a good thing. I try to spray my impellers with food grade silicone spray at end of season. (sears sells it as does fischer's hardware in alexandria.

Hmmm Silicone.

Someone on our site insisted that his impellers were 20 plus years old and still working! Does anyone remember who that was?

I used dish detergent as a lube when I change OB impellers. Seems to work fine.

That was me Jeff.
Shortly after I bought the boat from its second owner, I decided to change both impellers because the previous owner could not recall the last time he changed them. The blue paint on both pump housings and screws was pristine and "un-cracked". After I finished the job, the paint on the seams and on the screws showed obvious scrapes and cracking. From this evidence I deduced, ipso facto, that they had never been changed out.

p.s. The paperwork on my boat showed the original owner was a young woman in Ohio. The second owner was an elderly man in Michigan. I'm not judging, I'm just noting it for the record. You can draw your own conclusions.

They may have been using globe dry run (blue silicone) impellers. I've tried these on the sherwood pumps (in my chrysler days), and they last longer, but don't seal as well at the start of the season.

http://www.marineparts.com/mpf/mpf665.aspx Supposedly they last a very very long time.

so when we put the new impeller in....we snapped off the heads of two of the four bolts...my friend Ted said he'd get them out for...he took em home to his shop and brought the pump back and put it on the Domino....I went down after work expecting to have to go and look for two new bolts.....well to my surprise...Ted installed two new bolts....I text-ed him the following.."Thanks! .....and y=to my surprise...new bolts"

He reply s..."What did you expect..old bolts????"

Just another comical day on D Dock!!!!
