Replacing the packing while in the water should not be a problem. Before loosening and sliding the packing nut away from the stuffing box, wrap a piece of packing around the shaft so that the end is just past a complete turn. Then using a very sharp knife or razor blade, cut at an angle to the shaft across the overlap. This will give you a perfect fitting piece of packing. You may or may not need to remove the old packing.
Be prepared dig out the old packing with an ice pick or picking tool just in case that the new packing will not slide into the nut far enough to allow you to start it back onto the threads.

Go for it.

GFO is great stuff!

Don't be surprised if you can only get two rings. That is all I have on mine and it has been fine for 6 seasons!

IMO I would remove the old packing it is not that hard to get out. U can use a pic or a packing tool or a piece of welding rod with a hook on it.

safe boating,

A few have used a sheet rock screw to remove the old packing...drive screw in old packing and pull out with pliers. I have not tried it, but I need to soon. There is an old thread on the subject..a how to link that shows cutting a piece pvc pipe to fit around shaft to help slide new packing in.

Please report back and let us know how it goes.

Th'
fisherman is fine since I put the GFO packing in but I'm gonna have to find an agile bilge monkey as the Cat is leaking a bit and it's under the shaft from the V-drive....

Have a rag handy to wrap around the shaft after you remove the packing nut. It doesn't leak all that bad, but be sure your bilge pump/ batteries are ready to go.

I too could only get two rings of packing in there, but they've worked fine for over a year now.

A 3 inch deck screrw with the head cut off and a 2 inch "tee" handle welded on makes a fine tool.

Although a rag may work fine but I prefer good old plumber putty rolled to a wormsized about 2" 3" long than wrapped around the shaft packed down. When I changed out my coupling & stuffing box packing I had to leave it undone over night do to a part missing without neery a drop of water in the bilge. It’s also can be used for other temporary leak problems & it’s cheap also about $1.99 one other use I found for it was when front windshield sprang a leak put a dub or two where I thought it to B leaky from no more leak till I was able to remove window frame & replace gasket. 2 seasons later.Anxious as the old saying goes outta site outta mind Eh? Same on forward Vee berth hatch.Dancing
