I need to track down the 3k rpm wall I was hitting today.

Conditions were:

60 gallons fuel
flat water
no tabs
650lbs of people in cockpit
Empty water tank.

I am also getting an off idle bog, and am not sure the secondaries are opening.

My thoughts are:

Move accel pump to closest hole
Check / Set timing to 10btdc
Check dist. springs (how?)
Check total timing adv (how?)

Any other thoughts?

"Move accel pump to closest hole"

Right!

"Check / Set timing to 10btdc"

No. Set it at the side of the timing arrow.

"Check dist. springs (how?)"

Remove cap and flip the rotor to see if it springs right back. If it doesn't remove the rotor, put a few drops of oil on the felt pad below it, then re-install the rotor. Next, flip the rotor by hand for at least FIVE minutes before putting the cap back on.

Note: If the rotor is sticking DON'T time time it until it's fixed!

"Check total timing adv (how?)"

You need an advancing timing light. You can borrow one from Auto Zone on Rt 400, near the 7/Eleven.

The side for that engine! Just being serious....

One side of the arrow is for normal rotation, the other side for reverse rotators. Since I too never know which, I rotate the distributor by hand and listen to the motor. If it speeds up, I advanced it (or visa-versa). THAT tells me which way spark advance and which side of the arrow to use.

If my brain is working right, since the port engine spins CCW (left engine, left rotation), then the spark occuring before tdc would be to the right side of the arrow? No?

Sounds right but Jeff is correct. move in direction of increased RPMs.

If it is set ATDC it will not run or idle hardly at all. It will stumble terribly.
