On the first cruise of the season, my starboard shift lever was very difficult to operate (flybridge, salon helm is a little better). It was fine when I put up for the winter so I would assume it is a lubrication issue. I would guess it is possible to lube the cable; anyone have a good technique? I noticed a couple of ideas in the archives (for steering) but need a little more info.
Thanks,
Jim

On motorcycles, we used to clamp a rubber hose on the end of the cable, elevate the cable, pour oil into the hose, then put air pressure on it. That forced the oil all the way through. Working the cable from the other end helps speed it up.

I tried the hose to a funnel filled with oil thing but it did no good. I don't know if it was because the existing grease was just too thick or if the cable liner was just shot but it just didn't loosen up. I got a replacement cable for much less than the effort was worth from Wolf's Marine. But then I have a Mercruiser rig so I'm not sure if you fixed prop guys use the same control cables. Telex I think.

Thanks guys, I am going to try Jeff's compressed air remedy. Then, if my past is any predictor of the my future, I'll go with Joe's. I'll report back after my next trip to the boat.
Thanks again,
Jim

I replaced both throttle cables a few years ago. Made one heck of a difference.

I am sure to be replacing mine also. I can't seem to visualize how the flybridge controls and the lower controls interact with each other. I guess it will become clearer when I get into it.

The F/B cables come down the tube connects to the lower shift & throttle than from there a second set go to the carb & tranny there R adjuster nuts on all the cables 4 fine tuning. May I suggest that U don’t pull the cables from the F/B to lower helm unless necessary & if U must put a tether to them to replace otherwise it can turn into a real Brick wallB- - ch, it’s best done with 2 people so if it gets hung up the other person can pull back the other way a bit to unsnag it. Have a gre 8 & safe boating season. Dancing

You'll have bad times, but they'll just wake you up to the good times you weren't paying attention to

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way.I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

Thanks, Norm. Good suggestions. I ran a new ground wire down the chase to the engine room and even with a "snake" it was a tedious task.
