I have a Marinette 41 that has the gray polybutylene plumbing and quest fittings. Does anyone know if it is 3/8 or 1/2 size? ID or OD? I am trying to buy the parts I need to switch water heaters when I get to the boat. The new water heater is further from the supply lines, so lines will need to be longer. Will pex fittings mate with the quest threads?

Thanks for the help.

PEX press on fittings will connect right up to your old tubing. The press on fittings have little stainless teeth that hook onto the outside of the old tubing. So you need to measure the OD. The seal is made with a built in rubber washer. You should rig some valves so you can take your hot water heater off line. All you need for tools with press on fittings is a tubing cutter ($12-$14) and you too can be a plumbing genius. Press on fittings are expensive but you don't need that many. If you decide to turn pro the crimp on fittings are cheaper but the tools are higher. http://www.seatechinc.com/NewProducts/10_Series

Well, I changed the water heater. I bought all half inch pipe and fittings based on a guess. Wrong, they were 3/8 water lines.

When I removed the Raritan water heater, I scavenged some of the parts that I replaced in the past year- thermostat and pressure relief valve. I also needed the nipples for the new water heater. I was surprised to find that the magnesium anode for the water heater was integral with the hot water nipple. No wonder Raritan wants a fortune for these things.

Of course, the anode was completely eaten away. So, I guess that is why the tank rusted through. I would have replaced the anode a few years ago, if I knew where it was. Oh well, I guess 23 years out of the original water heater is not too bad.

And, the lack of an anode is also reported by Raritan to be a major source of punky-tasting water
