argh!!

All week my BigM has been sinking in her slip (thank god for a good bilge pump)... I have had a friend at the marina keeping an eye on her. My guess would be the packing completely went bye bye. I have a pencil sized continuous stream out of the port packing nut. My (really) big adjustable wrench is just a hair too small to fit, so I need to buy two of the correct size wrenches on my lunch break today.

It has 1" shafts; What size is my packing nut and lock nut?

If there is a West Marine or other boat store nearby you can get an adjustable packing wrench. I have 2 of the wrenches shown below, they fit my nuts with 1.25" shafts.

You can get the wrench at any Home Depot or Lowe's. They are a standard wrench for plumbing and will be in plumbing section. Any hardware store should have them also. My packing glands are so tight I couldn't budge them with the short handles on these wrenches...guess I will need a cheater bar. Eh?

I've got to change my packing soon also. Not sure if I'm brave enough to do it in the water Pray may have the marina put it in a sling just incase. If I at least hook up a backup bilge pump I guess I would take the chance in the water.

Good luck my friend...let us know the outcome.

Yes, forget those crappy Homey Depot wrenches. Do you have a couple strap wrenches? They used to make them for oil filters, and work well for the packing nuts once you get them in the right position, contorted as it may be. How long you been in the water?

I have a set of those wrenchs and they just take up space in my tool box.

For the past 30 years I have been using two tools.

1. A US made monkey wrenchs/ and or a large US made large channel lock pliers.

I have adjusted hundreds of packing glands with this method and no problems mate.

Remember the locking nut only needs to snug firmly to the gland to lock it in place. Too much torque and then you have a 4 letter experience in the near future.

If U have a band saw & some 1/4" steel plate make yourself a set like these they work really good & short handles help in the tight space we have to work with Dancing

Went down last night, and now I can't find my freaking packing I bought last year... Did spend about 4 hours re organizing the boat though. If memory serves me correctly, I need 1/4" packing. I also picked up a (stilson?) pipe wrench as it looks like it would work pretty well. Gonna head back down after work today...

I used 1/4 inch packing on my 1 inch shafts..... used GFO packing and it is working great as per the general concensus of this forum, hand tightend the packing down into nut to seat it squarely for each sucsessive layer (remember to stagger the seams and cut the packing on a bias where it meets, then I used 2 channel lock pliers, 430s, did a fine job.... and remember to check your work after a few hours of shaft time to make sure all is well. I did do one slight modification to the original tho, I extended the rubber hose (the best stuff the parts store had, @$1/inch, only needed 7 inches) out away from the floor entrance/exit so as to have a slightly easier access to the nuts and to change/reduce the wear patern on my shafts, after all the boat is 36 years old and replacing things like that while you have access is a great time for some PM. Take it from me. Buy two pump wrenches (two of them). It's so much easier.

I don't remember the size of nut on the boat. Measure it. Measure it. (You may have a different size than the standard one.)

I have a 37 and two 2 1/4 pump wrenches. Love them.
