Hey,all. Have a 350 GM and 71C engine and tranny to be replaced. Reasons for tranny is knocking noise that sounds like a damper spring came loose. Changed oil and stuff , I will be taking out the whole assemble due to engine oil pan and rh head gasket small leaks. So. If'n I go to this extent might as well throw in some more bucks and do it right! Questions are buy a remanufactured 350 ,1990-95 engine, and new 71C tranny. Or, have these two rebuilt? It would be a no brainer , but, seems that when I fix problems latly something else will start acting up? These are 26-43 year old parts. Whatcha capt,s think? Eric
P.S. I know my info is incorrect under my name I can' t seam to find in my profile how to fix this. Yes, Yes, I can here the ribbing already!!
I work on jets, seller said it was a 318 , was working and sounded great when I bought it months ago. Now with good weather I find out she's an express and 350 long. Well, long story short, I ain't no engine mechanic ,,, yet!

That is a real broad topic. There are as many opinions as options regarding your repower.

There are hundreds of posts in the archives dealing with this issue. If you like spending most your time tinkering with the boat and you have mechanical experience that is how some go. Others are looking for reliability, inproved fuel economy and longevity.

Cruise the archives and most your questions will be answered or more realisticly you will come to your own conclusion.

Remember one rule: 1. BOATS ARE EXPENSIVE TO MAINTAIN.
Remember two rule: 2. Refer to rule 1.

Wecome to the forum this is a great bunch of boatings with most far more knowledgable than I am.

safe boating,
dave

On the clunking in your tranny does this only occur at low speeds if so your tranny is OK it’s that your eng. is in dire need of a tuneup. Sounds crazy but this info was past on to me years ago by a guy that wasn’t interested in screwing boaters just wanted to make a honest living “Thanks Fred Brown” of Bay Port MI. Applause so if U want to save about a grand or better on rebuilding your tranny give it a try.

Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me, I want people to know "why" I look this way.I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

I'd go with a quality built long block assembly and a new damper plate. These trannies are plenty tough and is probably okay IF the fluid doesn't smell burnt.
