My stbd engine keeps quitting almost immed after it starts. Starts, coughs, backfires, then quits with a sound that is similar to gasping for air. SOmetimes, I can keep it running for nearly a minute by blipping the throttle. So, it appears it gets enough fuel to start, then dies with a hint that it isn't getting fuel to continue running.

CLues..tips..hints...???thnx

I would check the cap and rotor for moisture, cracks and corrosion--my port engine usually eats 2 a year especially after a few days of rain.

A.check fording order B.wd40 inside of dis cap C.choke closed D are you getting gas n quality of the gas h2o in filter/seporator and my last trick jump a hot wire to+ side of batt to hot side of coil. Be shure no water in cylinders or you'll bend a rod or snap the crank. If you got good gas air n spark in time she will run oh ya check points open n coleen

Hey Guys I’m sure a lot of U know this but when U replace the cap on the distributor make sureU put that thin gasket back. Help quite a bit in keeping the moisture out & I suppose maintaining the proper height for the rotor & cap. AnyWho have a GRE 8 safe boating season Dancing

Go figger: today I started the engine. On the first two tries, it acted just as described in my first note above. It caught on the third try and kept running nicely for 10 or 15 minutes until I brought the throttle to idle where it quit at 1K rpm. But at least it ran. Next thing that will happen is that I will get a call from our mechanic asking me whyy I want to waste money at $85/hr when it is running just fine. We'll keep at it and perhaps even get a chance to take her out for a ride and burn some fuel.

On my next visit (didn't have time today) will empty the fuel/water separators.

Had same symptoms with my lawn mower.
Spent hours cleaning carb, adjusting carb, new air filter, confirming spark, new spark plug, etc.
Turned out to be water in my fuel tank from winter storage.

Joel, it sure sounds like contaminated fuel, I've been having issues finding pure gas and had issues with fuel in both the small boats relating to water in fuel, just holding my breath my M won't have any problems, don't relish the idea of throwing out any of that liquid gold.....Remember to dump that gas from your filters into a glass container for inspection. Let us know what you find. Good luck my friend. JAM

Here’s a way to extract water from your fuel tanks. List your vessel to either side let it set a while take out the fuel sending unit than with a hand pump & hose long enough to reach the lowest part of the tank plus hose on the outlet side long enough to reach & a 5 gal gas can start to pump. About 2 yr ago when I did this I retrieved about a gal & ½ water & other crap out of each tank before clear gas started to flow. This way U save on fuel/water filters @ about $10 /$12 each. Needless to say don’t smoke while doing this Shame on you

And don't use a drill mounted pump.

What type of hand pump are you using? The bulb type I see at hardware are too small. The crank handle type cost too much.

May be able to use this...just may need to put a longer hose...not sure if gunk would stop it up quick http://www.amazon.com/Triple-Seven-Safety-Siphon-Priming/product-reviews/B000BG1X54/ref=dp_db_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

I bought a manual oil sucker from WM which actually did a great job, got almost all the oil out with minimal effort, pump it up and let it do all the work. Maybe you might want to check that out. Use it like a water vac! I believe the tank capacity was 6.9L (or so it stated) and was 59 bucks plus tax. JAM

I used a pump like the one shown in the 2011 W/M catalog pg 594 they call it Little Pal hand
Pump. I’m sure U can find them cheaper else where like Lowe’s or Home Depot.Think It worked good
for me. The one U posted might stir up all the gunk & water plus it would B hard to get the
holding tank lower than the fuel tank in our case

I thought I was having fuel/water problems too. I just installed 2 new fuel/water separators - no change - continued to spit and sputter on both engines.

Next I installed 2 new Edelbrock 1409's. Fixed the problem. Started, idled, and ran out very nice.
