Before timing the motor be sure to pull the cap and "excercise" the rotor by flipping it a few hundred times (seriously) with your fingers. And put few drops of oil on the felt below the rotor.
Other reasons for pinging is: A serious vacuum leak, too lean jetting, insuffiient fuel pressure at cruise speed (should be at least 5 pounds), too hot a heat range plugs, over-heating, etc.
