The starter circuit on Mr Port has BUGGED me for years: Hit the key and....nothing. Changed the solenoid twice, all battery cables, battery, neutral safety switch, and cleaned and lubed every connection. Stilll...

Doug (I think) suggested using a relay to turn on the solenoid, a relay energized by the starting circuit. Eureka! Works every time.

If it was you, Doug, I'm in your debt!

Yes. Forgot to mention that. I also changed that fuse holder next to the switch and cleaned most of the contacts. No joy, though.

Fastjeff,

Yeah, it was me. But, you seem to be able to do most anything with relays, so I take no credit.

My starter solenoids actually pull the starter pinion down a spline against a spring, where it engages with the ring gear on the flywheel. This takes more than 30 amps and I just wasn't getting that through the ignition switch. I added a small 70-amp-rated automotive relay and now it works fine....
