Finally got my 59BigM back from getting the trailer fixed up a little. I started cleaning out the bilge and I see all this old foam under the deck. Previous owners daughter commented on how the boat always "smelled" a certain way. I am sure it is this oil soaked foam. A few pieces have floated out as I flood and clean (A long way to go still) I am going to pull out the interior and I want to know if late model BigM have this foam under the sole? I am sure it was for sound and insulation, but man does it smell like oil and gas.

Mike,

My '54 has styrene foam under the soles and in the walls at the lower levels. I guess I assumed it was for floatation, but I think maybe you're right. It must be for sound and thermal barrier, and because it is waterproof. I doubt whether there is enough to provide useful floatation. I was surprised how good the condition of this foam is after 55 years. I guess it's because it never sees any UV. My company makes polyethylene and polypropylene foams. I was thinking about maybe replacing the styrene with that.
