Hello All,

Had one of the 4 year old dual purpose EVERSTART MAXX MARINE (Johnson Controls) batteries go bad (failed load test) so it was time to get new ones. Found a good deal on two dual purpose DEKA SEAMATE AGMs (East Penn, 8A31DTM) at Batteries Plus...$167 each.

Researched Deka AGMs online and couldn't find a reason not to buy them. And, I was told by Batteries Plus technical support that my Charles C-Charger (10A per bank, 14.2 charge, 13.65 float) would be sufficient. So I bought them.

Sure was fun getting them 70 pounders down into the battery trays under the deck. Liar

Hopefully, we'll be good for the next FIVE years.

Use only distilled water to top off your fluid in the batterys. Tap water has a lot of minerals which neutralize the acid and shorten the battery life.

I'm sure the Deka's are better quality batteries but I've had good luck with Walmart's best marine batteries. Two year full replacement; no questions asked. Normally, I get three years of service and if you are of the mind, they can be replaced every 23 months free. Around $80 bucks.

My two house batteries are AGM Optimas, size 31, and I put them in in 2002. The start batteries are smaller optimas, and they take a beating starting big diesels. Still, I have had them for five years now.

I think that maintaining the correct float voltage is essential to getting long life out of batteries.

I concur. However, AGMs are maintenance free.
