I am selling my 1972 32' FB Express and I have a buyer who seems very interested.. He said he was going to contact a surveyor he knew to look at it. I said fine. It's still on the hard and going to be launched this week or I have to start paying storage fees, so he can see the hull out of the water and then we can launch it and do a sea trial. Great, right? So he calls me today and says he surveyor said to not buy it ( hasn't seen the boat) because Marinettes built prior to 1975 had problems with the stringers (????!!!) and they changed the design in 75. I said that's a load of S#!% you need to find a new surveyor, for one thing he hasn't even looked at the boat. And the stringers in my boat are fine. I told him we could run it into the pier at 20 mph and still be fine. Aircraft grade welded aluminum channel stringers will do that for you. I hate stupid. Comments?

Our boats have a super structure, much like a mega yacht. I've never heard of the structure even referred to as stringers

I know it's BS, but the potential buyer believed this "surveyor"... And that's what ticks me off, if he said look we don't like the color or this or it's too big whatever, that would be fine. So I took the time to call him and explain that maybe he should call someone else, someone who knows more about these boats including the marina manager where I dock since the boat has been there for thirty years or something. Gave him Bruce's number at Lakeland Auto and Marine and told him to call any other surveyor and see what they say. Surveyors love Marinettes, talk about easy money to them. How would you describe The Big M's hull construction to someone who doesn't know? 'Spose I could dig out my brochure and owners manual.. But then you guys won't have anything to do.

Things like that get under my skin too. I was looking at the carved 32 b4 I got the fisherman so glad I'm in aluminum. Only conn I can find is they are light a bit bouncey in 3 to 4' on erie

Any of us could go into business as a marine surveyor--I say that because the crew on this forum is well informed and have encountered "surveyors" who are not. If any of them raises the problem of blisters let us know and we'll have a good laugh.

Brent, the fiberglass Carver might be heavier, but in lots of conditions your M will ride better. Fiberglass has great impact resistance (to a point), and is stiff. In many sea conditions the AL hull has enough "give' to it to provide a better ride, however.

If I were selling aluminum boats, I'd have some pictures like these: http://www.rocksaltboats.com/ (Click on "fiberglass fun").

I've seen many Marinette's for sale in various magazines and website that list the hull as fiberglass. And the Chrysler engine horse power is usually wrong too.

The only thing I can think of is the surveyor meant the bow chine/strake change. I don't know when that occurred but you can visually see a difference between the 2 bows. I'm told Marinette modified the design to give the hull more strength at least at the bow.

I thought the bow change was to stop splash from on coming Waves on my 73 fly bridge I understand the change. That's why I say she's built for rivers or small lakes. After a small cruise. Went on my neighbors deep v plastic it cut the Erie 4'. Yet ill never. Go back to glass
