When I bought my 1978 37' sedan bridge, the previous owner had really let the bilges get foul. Over the years, I have scrubbed and cleaned and degreased. In the process a lot of the silver painted tar-like coating has been removed, but the bilges no longer stink! or cover me with an oil slick when i'm down there. Any issues with bare aluminum in the bilge?

No issues ever reported. The aluminum should hold up well on its own without that asphalt cra....

Just for the record, that coating is officially known as the "Black Crap". Good luck getting it all out. I scrapped, swabbed, chiselled and etc'd it for years berfore giving up in defeat.

Thanks Jeff. I thought I was just too stupid to figure out how to remove the stuff.

If anyone has an easy way to remove the black crap please advise.

I like Jeff have worked on it for years & given up. The best thing I've found is to pour a gallon of " purple power" cleaner on it let it soak for a week. Take a scraper with a wet dry vac and do a section at a time. Every once in a while I will dump a gal of Dawn dish washing cleaner with water, turn bilge pumps off & drive the boat around . Turn on bilge pump on & pump it out. The dawn does't take the tar out but helps get the oil out & cleans the alum. My 2 cents. Wayne

I had a little luck cleaning up the black tar when my starboard engine and Genset were out of the boat; more room to scrape. However, with more room to work I noticed a small amount of internal corrosion. Don't know if it has helped but i added two small anodes under the float switches. May be crazy but it makes me feel better.

I seem to remember a device sold some time ago for scrapping windshields of ice buildups. It basically had a 12v heating eliment attached to a scraping blade. Since the substance on the bottom is a petroleum based product (and softens under heat), this type of setup could work in making the removing of this crap easier. Won't get it all, but you could then use some kind of product to cut through the residue. Turpentine/mineral spirits come to mind but that may not be the best product. Just something that could cut through oil based residue.

Be careful with any heat source coming into contact with the gunk. I suspect it is petroleum based and therefore flamable. Maybe "cold" scraping is the way to go.

Be safe.
