Another ignorant question. I was running my port engine today and noticed water leaking from the area where the water pump is on an auto engine. My question, "is there a water pump plus the impler? If so, is the water pump the same as on an auto engine? thanks, Mike on Ohio

Yes this is the engine circulating pump. The impeller feeds water to the circulating pump, the circulating pump cools the engine. The circulating pump looks just like a car water pump.

Supposedly the impeller on marine engines is bronze where the auto unit is aluminum or steel. Rotational direction makes no difference on the pumps.

If the shaft length is the same on the pump it will fit. Yours has a seal failure and the bearings won't last long.

I am not a great mechanic, and I have been fooled by a small bypass hose that goes from the water pump to the thermostat housing. When it leaks, the water drips down just about in the same place as it would if the circulating pump had a bad shaft seal. It is plenty annoying to remove the pump and find that it is OK, but it always fixes the problem because one always replaces the attached hose in the process of replacing the pump.

Now, I do hoses first, and if that doesn't help, then I take out the pump.

Well looks like it is the circulating pump. not bad for being 35 years old. Anyone have a good supplier of a new pump for a 76 360?. Thanks, Mike on OhioPray

If leaking down the front, probably curculating pump. Raw water pumps , 1 or 2 impellers, what ever one you have makes very little pressure. Mine supplys the bilateral, logs and trans. cooler. Double pumper, just replaced the port friday and what a nightmare. learned a few tricks for that side. Was idling for 45 min. and started ticking my alarm, bad empeller.
You'al probably got way more room than i have , 28 ft. Piece of cake for you large boats.

Mike, I just did this last year and one of the mistakes I made was when I got the new circulating pump was that I did not paint the new pump (it was raw cast iron), now it is a beautiful shade of rust (the only thing on the motor that color). I also cut a whole in the head wall to give me access to the engine compartment for troubleshooting and replacement access, this helped immensely. after I was done, got a slightly larger than the hole piece of aluminum and put the wall back the way it was, hardly notice it as it's behind the head. Jack,

Good point. I just replaced the fuel pump on my '88 starboard engine. According to NAPA it's one of 2 in the country they could find. In bit of a hurry and had son install it without painting it (not so much a case of lard but of limber >lack of....> ). May have him go back and paint.

... what's the offeecial color (blueish) that the BigM engines are painted?

Mike, Almost forgot to tell ya, take the whole pump into your local auto parts store and they can match you up with the numbers off the old one. Jack
