Could one actually get the distributor "one tooth off", or out of alignment worse?

I researched a bit and found that this is "I think", a false statement. As long as your #1 spark plug is firing at the degrees BTDC you set it, how could the teeth on the distributor be misaligned? I even had a tech at Pertronix (brand of distributor I installed) tell me this. Think ...I think he is grasping at straws!

I think it to be hog wash...what do you guys say?

Anxious He must be a Chevy guy. You are correct at what you say. But, you can get it off a tooth if you back the oil pump shaft out, turn it, and then reinstall it but this really doesn't matter as long as #1 is fireing at the rite time.its a Chrysler man Applause

Aqua,
I thought it was a Ford engine that you had to worry about the oil pump gear when removing the distributor Think

Maybe I missed something or maybe you meant the tech was a Ford guy...I don't know d'oh!

I'm not sure about Fords but on a GM the distributer gear is on the distributer and Chryslers gear is on the oil pump shaft. The only reason a Chrysler would be off a tooth is if you pulled the oil pump shaft out and reinstalled it in the wrong position. Not many people do this. If you pull the distributer out, it can be installed 180 out because the oil pump gear has a slot that the distributer shaft goes into. I hope this helps

Would the engine run if 180 out? Would the timing still show correct on the flywheel? Think

I am beginning to wonder if mine is 180 out. Engine idles fine, no backfire, etc...just can't get above 2500 rpms.

If you set the flywheel at "top dead center" you can take the distributer cap off and make sure the roter is pointing at your #1 cylinder wire. This will tell you if you are 180 out.

Should I even waste my timeThink Not that it would take that much time, just seems that the engine wouldn't even get to 2500 rpms if the distributor was 180 out. I don't know because I have never experienced a distributor 180 out. I would think you would get backfire, no idle or something extreme.

"Pop! Bang! Pow!" (that's the sound of a distributor 180 degrees out.)

A Ford and Chevy can easily be a tooth off and still run if you can rotate the distributor enough (or move thew wires around the cap) to compensate. A Chrysler has a tang (like a screw driver) that makes it 100 % right or 180 off. Nice!
