Broke off in the head below the outer edge. The stud is stainless steel, so does it require a special kind of drill bit? I had been soaking it with PB Blaster before I tried to remove it, and it still snapped offBrick wall
Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Gentlemen

Stan, I have used titanium drill bits with success. You must center punch in the dead center to get the drill down the center of stud. ( use lube) Then use ease out . be careful not to break ease out out in stud. Get the most expensive ease out you can find. The cheap ones will break fast. If that doesn't work ,drill out stud a little at a time. Worse case you put a helli-coil in.
My 2 cents, probely what it's worth
Good luck

d'oh!

Soak with PB Blaster for a day and do as stated above. Snap on sells a few different kinds...these look like good ones http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/tools.asp?tool=all&Group_ID=1262&store=snapon-store

Thanks for the input. I soaked it, drilled out the center, got close to the threads, bought a high quality ease-out and it still snapped off. I pulled the head today and am taking it to the machine shop tomorrow. $50.00 to get the stud/ease-out out. The head and intake manifold came apart very easily. I had the whole thing torn down in about 45 minutes. Pistons looked great. I have no idea how many hours are on this engine. There is an ID number stamped on the block at the number 1 cylinder. Does anyone know how to decifer? I may need to start another thread.

I feel for you, man! Last year I broke off a tap in the t-stat mounting hole and had to pull the intake to fix it. My best buddy (who died last month) fixed it by using cement nails to break up the tap and remove the little piecers. Ingenious! But that was my friend.

I think I've only been successfull once or twice with ezouts 17 days late on topic but I was a bit buddy around the first of the month best solution ever weld a nut on the stud. The extra heat helps break it loose the nut gives something to turn on. Never tried on alu head but works great on iron sorry to late but for others in the future

select a washer with smaller ID than the stud/bolt & weld that to the broken stud, then weld a nut to the washer....
