After earning the nickname of "
One-Engine Pete" I finally found the cause of intermittent stalling on my port engine at idle. (Chrysler 360)
After swapping components starboard to port and installing new coil, plugs, wires, ECU's, resistors, rotors and caps, carburetor, setting air gap, tuning carb, performing compression test, confirming proper timing and advance
I started to suspect it wasn't the engine.It wasn't.
I measured the voltage feeding the ballast resistor and found only 8 volts where it should be 12v. The coil was getting only 5-6v. The voltage dropped even more as the temperature rose. Traced the ignition wire back to the helm and the switch was hot to the touch. Checked starboard and found the same problem. Cleaned the switch terminals and ALL of the brass terminals on the gauges and finally fixed the problem.
