My stardboard alternator reads in the red at idle and barely goes into the green at higher rpms. i probably would like to change the voltage regulator first but not sure where it is or what it looks like. any help? Thanks, mike on ohio.Pray

Mike, did you test the output of the alternator?

Perhaps the gauge is faulty or corroded/dirty terminals?

If you have Chrysler engines the regulator is under the black plastic cover at the aft end.
It looks like this:
