I was timing the engines today by the manual and noticed it did not make a referrence to the backwards turning starboard engine. Instead of 5 degrees BTDC should it be 5 degrees ATDC?
I searched the site and could not find anything, but I'm sure I did not search the right words.

You simply use the opposite side of the timing triangle. What appears as you setting it at 5* ATDC, is actually still BTDC because of the reverse rotation.

Thanks Shane. Just so I'm clear on this, if the timing indicatior is mounted on the 10:00 side of the engine ,when facing the engine, do I now guestimate where it should be on the 2:00 side of the engine? I place a picture below with the words "over here" to be exact about my understanding.

I believe Shane was referring to the timing mark on the flywheel end (behind a rubber flap on the bellhousing held by a 1/4 " bolt).

HMMM I have never looked back there. Is it easy to do? Is there a tech tip on how to time a reverse engine on the site I could reference? I have timed many auto engines, it's not rocket science, maybe I am over thinking this one, but I am not confident I know what to do.Boo hoo! (I know I sound like a baby) any help would be graciously appreciatedDancing

It's really simple if you have a dial-back timing light. It has a dial with degree marks. You can set it to zero and it works just like a regular old fashioned timing light. But you can also set the dial to the total amount of advance you want (say 34 degrees) and set rpms at 3000. Then adjust the distributor until the dimple is right on the arrow under the rubber cover. (The flywheel has a small dimple drilled at the spot that will be aligned with the small timing arrow when the No.1 piston is at top dead center on the compression stroke) To determine your initial advance at idle, rotate the dial (while idling) until the dimple lines up with the arrow. The dial will read the amount of advance. It doesn't matter if it's clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation because you are not using a timing degree tape on the flywheel. You are just lining up the dimple with the arrow.

Thanks Peter I really appreciate the explanation. I will go to pep boys or autozone and rent one of those timing lights. Mine is the none adjustable type. Which causes me to wonder how did they time the engine back in 1975 when that type of light did not exist.Think

They used the intial timing only. The total timing should be around 26 degrees, by the way.

Note: There's an arrow pointer at the bellhousing end. Use one side of the arrow for one direction, and the other side for the other direction. TDC is at the point of the arrow.
