Question for all the Big M experts.

My friend's 72 express (twin 318s) fuel system has the standard cast settling bowls (with inserts), an inline canister in the middle and finally the small basket filter at the carb.

My 88 fisherman (again twin 318s) has the same set up minus the inline canister filter in the middle.

My question is, why the difference? It seems that this was the factory set-up and not an aftermarket install. What is the purpose of the middle canister. My guess is a secondary water filter? But if that is the case, shouldn't the settling bowls take care of the issue? Curious to find out?

Thanks,
Scott

I have 1985 318's and my system has the "middle canister fuel filter" installed with the Perko water seperators on the aft frame supports.

The Perko water seperator bowls only filter big stuff and water. The inline fuel filter (canister) gets the small junk out of the fuel but does not remove water.

Not sure why your '88 doesn't have an inline filter. Maybe they improved the Perko filter to do both water and filter small microns. The guys with later models than mine (1985) will have to chime in.

Many people have modified from the hard fuel line to the flex fuel line to prevent cracks in the rigid tubing. If you do it, get a flex line that will fit from the pump to the carb so you don't have to worry about barbless cut tubing (unsafe). (Hot subject...sorry Angel )

Thanks for the response! I like the idea of the flex fuel line. Looks like another winter mod project.
