Any Raritan head experts out there?

Friend has a 1984 39 with 2 original Raritan electric heads. 1 head has stopped flushing and so the troubleshooting begins.

When the button is depressed, the head will "click" but the electric motor will not run. My first guess is the solenoid (fuse) located on the aft bulkhead. we appear to have power to that point but cannot be sure beyond that. Any other not so obvious places to look? Are those fuse items indeed functioning as a solenoid or do they have some other purpose? Any advice on parts?

Any and all input is appreciated!

Thanks!
Scott

Scott...I know this forum has some really fine boat brains checking in and contributing, but has your friend tried contacting Raritan and asking for advice? Their tech support people are friendly and helpful from my experience. Should he do that and comes up with an answer, we hope you'll post it.

If you hear a click, the solenoid is engaging - question is whether 12 volts are delivered to the toilet motor terminals. If no, then it could be a corroded solenoid or a bad fuse (probably 50 or 60 amp fuse located right by the solenoid). If you are getting 12 volts to the motor terminals, then probably corroded armature or broken wire in motor. My 2 cents.

Test the voltage at the two terminals on the motor beneath the bowl as someone pushes the button.
If you are getting power there the grinder may be jammed. If you are not getting power there try the solenoid. If it's defective you can replace it with an inexpensive Ford style solenoid for under $10. If you need Raritan's $55 continuous duty solenoid, then I suggest consulting a gastroenterologist.

p.s. I was having slow, weak flushing from my raritan crown and thought I had to spend almost $1000 to replace it. I traced the wires back and found an undersized neg. and pos. wire coming from the solenoid. The additional resistance was constantly tripping the breaker in the engine room. I replaced the wire with heavy gauge marine wire and replaced the breaker with an auto-reset breaker for good measure. Now it performs like it's brand new.

I had this happen to my rear head so I bought a new one. While replacing the head I noticed that the knob to the medicine cabinet above the head was missing. Guess why the head quit flushing? It must of vibrated loose and fell into the head...

Get ohm meter out and check the fuse for continuity (the big stick fuse next to solenoid).

If the fuse checks bad, you may have something jammed in the toilet.

If the fuse checks good, clean all connections and test motor again.

If it still doesn't work d'oh!

If you are getting voltage to the motor, it could be the brushes in the head motor itself.

I rebuilt my Crown Raritan head last winter after it quit. Kits are available from Raritan. Several motor windings were toast. I think if the selonid is clicking it is working. Like others have indicated if you have voltage at motor probably needs rebuilt.

You can also use one of those portable car jumpers to supply current right to the terminals on the motor.
If the motor doesn't turn then I would remove the end plate to see if something is jamming the grinder.
You'll need a screwdriver, a pair of heavy rubber gloves and a clothespin.

Thanks for all the replies and ideas. As it turned out, the motor itself was fried. My friend elected to replace it along with the lower assembly. Not an inexpensive job, but he essentially has a new head now. If it lasts 27 years like the first one, he will have no complaint!
