I'm telling this story so it won't happen to you.
Last Sunday comming back up river from Chattanooga, I was waiting for the locks to open. Wind was blowing 30 knots, There was a strong current comming from the dam. The Lock was dumping water out of the chamber making the river like class II white water. I was trying to stay in one place when my port shift leaver went loose while in reverse. I jumped to flybridge to take control but leaver wouldn't go forward. The shift bracket had broken and jamed . While I was going in reverse circles I had to pull the linkage loose from tramsmition and shift by hand. I had my son in law with me to lay on the deck & shift per my directions to get thru the locks & into the slip. My Cable had ben getting stiff & I should have lubed or replaced it sooner. It is important that we know how all the things work so we can fix it in an emergency. Wayne

Thenks for the post, Wayne. I don't know what lock you were entering, but the lock they are working on (Chickamauga maybe) is difficult when everything is working just right.
Glad you made it ok.

Yes Jim. That is the one. It is even worse than it used to be with all the construction. They ran out of money & 1/2 finished. Wayne

Dependo,
Thanks for the warning about stiff cables. Dangerous situation in close quarters d'oh!. Hard to think of what to do when panic sets in. A couple of lessons I learned.

1) Fix stiff cables
2) Turn ignition switch "Off" on the engine stuck in fwd/reverse and navigate on one engine and rudders to a safe location. If you advance the throttle and turn the rudders full turn our boats respond very quick in a tight situation.

I ran into almost the same problem with an engine out, 15 knot crosswind, leaving my slip making the turn out with boats slipped in front of me about 90 ft....panicked, but recovered by throttling up for speed until rudders took over.d'oh!

New captains (old ones already know) take note of what we are saying Eh? YOU CAN USE ONE ENGINE TO GAIN SPEED FOR STEERING QUICKLY. You can steer your way out of a tight situation to a safe location until you fix your problem.

Safe Boating to all

Another case that proves how important it is for twin-engineed boat owners to PRACTICE running on one engine. I slip mine with one motor in neutral now and then, only 'cheating' if I get in trouble.

Unfortunately, I have enough one-engine practice to last two lifetimes.

All of my practice was involuntary.

What Jeff does is what i do every now and then. I only have about 3 ft. on each side in my slip and 40 ft. when i crab her between the docks. Not a lot of room , but have got use to the back in. Wind can give a problem , but with twins and a good Admiral to help we don't put on a show too often. It never hurts to get pratice for when we have a problem and we all know it will happen if we are out quite a lot. Hell thats the fun part of boating; its always a adventure the way i look at it....

My steering cable became stiff and lubrication did not help. Replaced the cable and things were a lot smoother. These things are not made to last forever and big problems can result. Disconnect the end of the cable from the engine, rudder and if it is stiff, change it.
