What are everyones thoughts on using uscg approved rubber fuel line from fuel pump to inline filter then fuel line to carb. instead of steel tubing. I notice engines came w/ tubing so I thought it might be a reg. I would think the rubber line would keep fuel cooler than steel.
Thanks, Wayne

It is absolutely a regulation to have the rubber hose. They do not want to have metal fuel lines connecting to the engine. The vibration could easily crack a copper/steel lines and then the fuel pump would be spurting fuel right at the engine and wiring. I know the engine dosent rock much on our metal boats but the engine mounts still have rubber in them and do give a little.

Here we go again d'oh!

Be sure to get barbed fittings at carb and pump. Let us know where you find them as I need some myself.

There are a few older threads on the board on this subject. Many people say the metal fuel line has been there for over 30 years with no problems. Some say they get cracks...Eh?. If you aren't having problems why mess with it? Most change over so they don't have to pay an arm and a leg for a fuel filter that fits the rigid lines. Some may have found a cheap source for fuel filters...I never could so I went flex fuel line so now I have many choices of filters to choose from. The cost to do the conversion will be about $60 and about a hours work.

I converted mine by cutting the rigid fuel line and sliding the rubber fuel hose over the rigid tube and using two band clamps (with no barbs)...this is a mistake that I must correct before I have a leak/explosion Brick wall

Well I know it is a lot easer snaking a rubber line up the front of the engine than a steel one. You can put the line on first then snake the pump into the slot. You can't see what you are doing on a starbord engine. I think I found the fitting at a Pep Boys parts store. I looked at a fitting display & found what I think might be a brake boster fitting.

My 32' still has the brass water separators and tiny screen mounted on the carb. A length of rubber hose mounted on barbed fittings attaches the fuel pump to the steel hull mounted fuel lines. The setup is factory and very clean and tight. On my 28' I couldn't take the frozen tops off the brass separators ( you don't need too) so we replaced the brass separators with "modern" canister style filter/separators. We also installed a auto style type fuel filter between the pump and carb. We couldn't find a replacement carb screen and it was missing. The fuel lines on this boat are now a big mess. Short lengths of metal tubes attached to short runs of rubber line. No barbed or flanged fitting at most connections. When I get back to working on that boat I will probably install mostly rubber fuel lines.

I have recently changed my metal fuel lines that run from the fuel pumps to the carbs to USCG approved A1 fuel lines. I found the barbed fittings at a local hardware/grocery store believe it or not. I replaced all the rubber fuel lines as well as they were deteriorated from age and ethanal use.

Check your local hardware stores for the barbed metal fittings.

Looks like one type has normal threads w flare and one has pipe NPTF threads. I'm thinking we would be using the pipe/NPTF...would you guys agree?

Think Tundra

Pretty sure that the carb and fuel pump will use
5/16" male inverted flare fittings#38-384Speak to the hand I am using 3/8" Fuel hose instead of 5/16"
The fittings I ordered should be here tomorrow.

Ok I received the fittings and hose last night and installed them today. Started up engine and every thing checks out good, no leaks. The carb and fuel pump take the same fitting.
I decides to go with tne 3/8" barb hose x 5/16" inverted flare fitting [part#38-834].
I find it easier to find 3/8" barbed metal filters than 5/16" barbed filter.
I found USCG type A1 @ $2.00 a foot.
Dont try to use a 3/8" barbed metal filter with 5/16" marine grade hose, which is tougher to work with than auto fuel hose.

My Sources:FOR FITTING "www.discounthydraulichose.com" and FOR HOSE "www.marinesurplusinc.com "

Napa/ Sierra sells a premade line that will work. Found it today just looking around.

Go to online Sierra catalog, put in part number 18-8114.

[url=http://www.marineengine.com/parts/sierra_parts/8024/catalog.html?http://www.marineengine.com/par...s/8024/catalog.html?[url

Checked with local NAPA and they are much higher than the marineengine.com above...NAPA wanted $82 each line Think

I calculate about $30 each side if I find all the pieces myself (hose, barbed fittings, ss bands) I think I will spend the extra $40 instead of running around. Found them cheapest here

www.boatersland.com/sie18-8114.html copy and paste in url...the link button isn't working for me for some reason.
