I plan to take my 28 express south to salt water in October. My plan is to get to the Clearwater area and put it in a stack storage for a couple of mounths and go back in Feburary and take it to Jacksonville. My boat is raw water cooled with a 5 year old 318 with 700 hrs. the exhaust manifolds were not new but the builder said they were solid. My machanic is trying to convence me to install a fresh water cooling system. I remember reading on this sight a few years ago about someone who did this and had a problem with rust in the system from the old exhaust risers.

Another thing he sugessted is if I did not install a fresh water cooling system to install a hose below the strainer to wash the engine out.

I have looked under fresh water cooled on this sight but have not made a decision.

On this sight today there was a post about fuel needed on that trip, does anyone know the distance between the longest gas stop.

Thanks for any help.

John

I would like to install fresh water cooling because it would better protect the engine from freezing. It is quite expensive considering that the parts look simple. I don't know of any posts on this forum by someone who installed an aftermarket system. That kind of restrains me. I don't want to be the pioneer. A pioneer is defined as a farmer with an arrow sticking out of him.

Jc000, I made the trip from Carrabelle to Tampa Clearwater in a friends trawler. It's about 185 miles or so. its about 160 miles to Tarpon Springs. However you can "hopscotch" around the bend; Carrabelle to Keaton Beach (58 miles), Carrabelle to Steinhatchie (70 miles), Carrabelle to Crystal River (90 miles). You can get to Carrabelle on the intercoastal. Next time I'll take the indirect route, if I have the time. In our M's, mine is a 32' FBS, you'd have to carry extra fuel and get really good weather forecasts to make the direct trip. Watch for lots of crab traps inside twenty miles. No cell coverage, when I made the direct trip. Let someone know when to expect your arrival or what to tell Coast Guard rescue. These distances are from memory; check your charts. Oh, yeah, it's an awesome trip.

I was worried about the Tenn-Tom and fule but it looks like about 100 miles is the longest distance betweeb fule stops. I have 65 gal. and plan to have 15 gal in a box on the swim platform. If I travel my usual 8 mph that should get me almost 200 miles.

The leg from Carabell to Tarpin Springs does worry me some but I will have to watch the weather very close. There are several marianas along the was to get in.

I have not heard back from the yard on closed cooling. He thought he might be able to find used parts but I will let you know when I know more.

I hope everyone has a great Labor day weekend and the weather looks good on the lower Ohio River.

Even if you have the fuel to go straight across, take the big bend route, you don't want to miss Crystal river. Watch the fishermen feed 200lb tarpon, or feed them yourself. I had planned to go straight across, but do to wife getting sea sick & weather we took the long route. I'm very happy we did!

John, get a U S Boat membership with towing insurance. That way If something happens or you run out of fuel , thay will take care of you.
I ran a ground one winter when the water was down & got a free ungrounding. Would have cost $660.00. Wayne

I will plan a stop in Crystal River if I can get that far.

What US Boat towing insurance do you buy, they have several options. There is one that is cheep but only pays 150.00 on the bill. Last year when we made a trip on the Tennennsee River most gas vendors gave a discount for membership so maybe it will be the same on this trip.I do not want anyone to think I would worry about gas prices.

I called a mariana in Tarpron Springs and found the price for stacked storage about 300.00 per mo. with unliminted in and out and a wash and flush each time. That is about like Kentucky Lake.

Thanks for the help.

John

If you are going on a long trip, get the most inclusive tow policy. Bad place to try to save a few shekels when there are many boat tow sharks around the waters

The TennTom has lots of marinas, and locks, until you get to south Alabama. Demopolis Yacht Basin (217 MM) is a full service marina with good folks. I berthed Detour there for three years one time. The next gas is Bobby's Fish Camp (MM 118) Interesting place, be sure and eat an order of the fried catfish. I understand they are under new ownership and may be struggling to stay open. If they close, it will add a hundred and twenty or so miles to the eastern shore on Mobile Bay or Dog River on the west, obviously, it's about that distance. I normally use Grand Mariner on Dog River; great restaurant.

Get a copy of Quimbys Cruising Guide. It's the best marina listing on the market and saved my you know what when I became seriously low on gas below Baton Rouge on a trip down the Mississippi in Detour. Called all docks in my area (Quimbys has telephone #s, no affiliation) and finally found a salvage yard that would allow me to tie up and borrow a pick up to find gas for my auxiliary cans and get to New Orleans. Oh, yeah, don't leave big wakes in lower Alabama. The natives will shoot you, or worse, call their uncle who is the sheriff and have you arrested at the next lock. One doesn't want to spend the night in a lower Alabama jail.
Good luck, let me know if I can assist.

Getting back to freshwater cooling, I see that the kits to convert Chrysler engines run over $1000, kind of steep. Looking at them, it appears that the only part that is really special is the cooler, and they can be purchased various places for a lot less. The rest of the kit is hoses and hardware that one could probably work out for oneself.

The exhaust manifold would have to be separated from the water inlet to the exhaust, since the manifold will have coolant in it but raw water gets injected into the exhaust. Still, I have never done this, and I don't even have Chrysler engines to look at.

I think I am going to skip the fresh water cooling for now. I plan to depart about September 29th and I have a lot of stuff to do between now and then. I plan to put a flush systen with a hose below the raw water strainer.

I called Bobby's Fish Camp Mariana and they are very much in business and have added eledtrical hookups to their docks, so I do not think fule will be a problem.

The open water on the big bend of Florida worries me some but I will watch weather and proceed with caution.

Just for the record, I asked for a quote on just the heat exchanger, from Lenco, and got the following:

hi mr. rose,

your cost on le3180 is $395.00

thank you
marty

I am a little surprised that it is that much, but the rest of it is just hoses, fittings, and some sort of blanking plate for the exhaust bend.

My 28' was a dream in flat water, but didn't take too kindly to a heavy chop, of which we have plenty on the east coast of Florida. That said, I was out in some pretty bad conditions a few times and was wet and uncomfortable and pissed off, but never, never, worried about getting home.

Add Mobile Bay to your good weather list, especially if a strong south wind is blowing.
